The actual name for this block is Port and Starboard. If Nancy Cabot had heard of Snowboarding and Slopestyle in 1937, I'm sure she would have changed the name of her block. Free rotary cutting instructions are here. The block finishes 12" x 12". I wanted really bright colors for this particular block. The athletes in this sport seem like daredevils. How do you get up the nerve to do all these stunt. Slopestyle, tests a rider’s ability to handle a variety of terrain by executing freestyle maneuvers down a course filled with terrain features including rails, hips, tabletops and a multitude of jumps, allowing riders to combine big air and technical tricks into one run. I loved watching one of the interviewed with Sage Kotsenburg, the US athlete who earned the first gold medal of the 2014 Sochi Olympics and the first-ever gold medal awarded in the new snowboarding slopestyle discipline. Basically he tried a trick that he had never practiced before and executed it flawlessly. This is the final block in the series. Watch for tomorrow's posting for a layout to incorporate all of these blocks. Happy quilting. This one is a bit of a reach. The actual name of the block in Block Base is "Shooting Star". I thought it was a good representation of Biathlon as this sport involves cross country skiing along with marksmanship. For the free rotary cutting instructions, please click here. I did add a few seams to make this block a lot easier to piece. I always go on a cross country ski trip to the North Shore of Lake Superior. The trip often coincides with the timing of the winter Olympics. Many years ago (when my nephews were young) they were watching the biathlon on television. They were very impressed that "Aunt Kari" was not only skiing, but carrying a gun and shooting at targets on her vacation. It was hard to disillusion them with the harsh realty of "no gun" and "slow moving skiing" which involved frequent falls down steep hills. Happy quilting. The actual name of this block was Flying X. As I was thinking about this block's name, there were a number of ways I could have gone. In addition to the ski jumpers, there were all the snowboarding competitors who also look like they are flying as part of their amazing tricks. This block is a variation on one found in EQ called 'Zig Zag border, Block was redrafted to change all angles to 45 degrees (making it much more rotary cutting and piecing friendly). Rotary cutting instructions can be found here. I think this block reminds me of the path those slolam skiers must travel going around the poles down the mountain. When I was researching this, I learned that they have options for snowboarding and skiing. Have you pieced any of the Olympic blocks? If so, I would love to see pictures. Happy quilting. Kari
