Paint by Numbers

6/24/2017

Welcome to my updated website and blog.  I've spent a good chunk of my time this week on an overhaul  and a switch to a new e-mail provider.  My brain cells definitely got a work out.  The layout is the same as before, just a more up to date look.  If something isn't working or is confusing, please let me know.

Dress Up Your Half Square Triangle Challenge

Next week we will get back to the Dress Up Your Half Square triangle challenge.  I've received a number of new blocks submissions and I am looking forward to sharing them with you.

Working with Color

I've been playing with some new modern quilt designs (a potential new class) and realized I needed some help with coloring the quilts.  The palette I am most comfortable playing in definitely does not work with modern.
After a bit of research, I found Joen Wolfrom's book Color Play and have been reading through it.  I also purchased her Three-In-One Color tool from Amazon and came up with a way to use it with Electric Quilt.

In my Electric Quilt video tutorial this week, I will share a process for working with this color pallete.  Techniques Included in this tutorial include:
  • adding colors
  • adding shades and tints
  • adding fabrics based on the colors used
  • the random recolor tool
Here are a couple of renditions of the 2 block quilt using the color scheme of Yellow Green, Chartreuse, Spring Green and Purple.

Dress Up Your Half Square Triangles Part 2

6/17/2017

For those that missed my post from a couple of weeks ago, I am embarking on a journey this summer to play with half square triangles.  And not just the plain half square triangle.

In Part 1, I played with dressing up my triangles.  If you missed the post, you can catch up here.
A number of you submitted your own half square triangle blocks.  Let me share them with you.
For Part 2 of the challenge, combine one of your half square triangle blocks with another one.  I will share how to do this in this weeks video.
From there, I created a number of settings for this new blocks.  I don't know about you, but this can get very addictive.

For those that would like to join the challenge, I would love to see one of your quilt designs.  You can either send me the Electric Quilt file, or an exported image of your quilt.

I will share any submitted quilts in a future blog post.

Border Flags

6/10/2017

One of our typical family vacations when I was growing up was a quick trip to Canada. Although there was a border crossing (an exciting part of the journey) there was no need for passports and we enjoyed picking up a couple of things that we couldn't get in the states.

So to celebrate Flag Day (June 14th in the United States), I decided to create two flags.  One for the US and one for Canada.  I also decided to make the flags "wave".

In my EQ tutorial this week I will share my tricks for doing this.

You may also download a free applique pattern for the block.  Just click on the block for the download.

Dress Up Your Half Square Triangle

6/3/2017

Picture
What are your thoughts when you need to make a half square triangle unit in a quilt?

What about when you need to make 500 or even 1000 of them.

I decided this post would be dedicated to bringing back respect for the half square triangle.  But in order to do so, it needs a little bit of dressing up.

So I gave myself a challenge to create 12 dressed up half square triangles.  Here were my "rules":
  • One hour to create everything (i.e. don't overthink it)
  • Design in Easy Draw only
  • Draft blocks that were "piece-able"
Here are my blocks.

Here is my challenge for you (if you choose to accept it).
  • Redraw each of the blocks above in Easy Draw.  (If you are struggling, download the image and bring it into Electric Quilt for tracing.)
  • Draw one or two dressed up half square triangle blocks of your own (stick to working in Easy Draw).

Hint -- here are the settings I used for drafting all of the blocks.  Very basic!

If you would like to share one of your new blocks with my blog readers, please send me an Electric Quilt file with your favorite dressed up block by June 11th.
Over the summer I plan to share a number of posts on playing with these blocks.  That's all I plan to say for now.  :)

But trust me -- it will be fun.

Online Classes Starting in June
