June 2019 Virtual Quilt Show

6/29/2019

Each month I give members in the Tech Know Quilters Membership Studio a challenge to apply the skills they learned during the last month in a quilt.  And then to share their design and what they learned.  Here are their submissions for their May classes.
Picture
Julie Pedersen It is hard to say just one thing that I learn from Kari's classes. I think this morning's Lesson 1 for the Advanced Border Design renewed something for me. I was looking at this and realized that it looked 3D to me...like I am looking down a hole. Sometimes the simplest thing can be the most profound. (1 block surrounded by variations of the same border)
Picture
Wanda Hizer It is hard to pick one thing but from the Quilt Layout class this is a quilt I designed working with Baby Blocks. I also loved working with the Pixelated quilt.
Picture
Linda Carlson I liked the Precuts Class I took in May so much, I used different fabric collections besides the Fish collection Kari used along with others I did not select. At times, I added different borders or chose some auto borders.

PictureWanda Jewell HI Kari, As I told you in the beginning Modern Quilts are not my thing. BUT... after taking this class, I believe that I have a new appreciation for Modern quilts and I like most of what we did this month. I took an unusual layout for me, added in blocks, flipped them around until I was happy with them, then added a border, then added more blocks flipping them until I was happy, then added another border and more blocks and more flipping, then the last border. Then I took the blocks in and exported them to image file, then imported them and redrew them as pieced/applique so I could put the arcs in as it was a very pointy pattern and I wanted to soften it up some. So after I traced the arcs out and saved the block, I took it to the layer 3 and added thread to the arcs I had drawn in. All in all I am very pleased with this quilt. It looks sorta 3D and it uses the thread tools which I hadn't done before and it looks pretty modern I think. :) Thanks Kari, this was another great month where I learned lots of things.

Nancy Messuri used the Kaleidoscope tool in Serendipity.

Bev Crouse I just finished the Easy Draw class at the end of May. One of the features I had really never used is the partition and stagger so I some fun playing. Love these classes Kari Schell. So here's my really simple quilt which I've entitled "Glass Shards". A four by four layout and one block alternated with a plain block.
Picture
Joy Hegglund I saw a similar quilt at a show and decided to play.
Picture
Dorothee Ilgner I was in the Quilt Layouts Class. I used the Vertical Strip Layout and played with two alternating block settings to design a skewed version of a Streak of Lightning set.
Picture
Suzanne Golden I took the Medallion center class and really enjoyed it. The center block was made using clip and flip and then serendipity. I then wanted to add the flying geese around. Had to figure out how larger to make the ring for the geese. I then created the borders using other shapes to go long with the others. One border uses the center block in a smaller version and then rotating and flipping the blocks. I really enjoyed.
Picture
Kristy Soard. - My Quilting Bee design truly evolved from a synthesis of the multitude of skills Kari has taught us! The center is set on a one patch quilt, which created some challenges in the design process. The process uncovered some features that I would love to be tweaked by EQ8, and have talked to them about them. They are always so receptive to our ideas. I have some other changes I want to implement before I totally call this done, but wanted to share as my challenge quilt for the Layout class.
Picture
Sharon Osborne I have not had a lot of time the last 6 weeks or so for designing new projects in EQ8 ( I hope that changes for July!) but I did learn something new in the second help session of May. I took a photo of a poppy in my garden that had just opened and turned it into a mosaic. I just love it. I have done several of Cheryl Lynch's mini mosaic quilts and I love them.
Picture
Barbara O'Brien Kaleidoscope classes have been great. As with all your classes, I've learned a lot , enjoyed them and gotten such a great sense of accomplishment. This is a block I designed, printed out the foundation pieces and actually made. It's the first time I've used their foundation printouts and they are amazing. Even the points are trimmed so that they are easy to piece. Can't wait till we do the next classes.

Micheline Herzan's very first fabric landscape quilt -  "Santorini Sunset". These bell walls are approx. 1,200 feet above sea level. The left one is my fabric version. The right one is what I drew originally in EQ8.   I did not finish the edges as I want this 12.5" x 12.5" quilt framed like a picture to hang on a wall. Kari, thank you very much for the great lessons on Landscape quilts.
Picture
Caroline Block Thank you Kari for the tutorial on designing a pillow sham for a bed quilt. The photo on the right is the bed quilt designed in EQ8 using an traced photo of an applique of Kim Diehl's, surrounded by Hexagons, with a tile squares on point border with a Variable star in the tiles. quilt size is 104x110. The photo on the left is the designed standard pillow sham. The size of the sham was adjusted to accommodate piecing. The fabric used are from Kim Diehl's line Wit and Wisdom.

I used EQ7 but I did not know how to put in the fabrics then. But I do now thanks to Kari Schell. The Circus themed one is because I was born in Peru, Indiana where they do an amateur circus every summer since 1958. My daughter loved the circus and went with her Grampy every year till she had to miss to take the bar. The Purple and Pink was for the other daughter whose daughter loves Princesses.

Auditioning Improv Quilt Blocks

6/22/2019

Inspired by Mid Century Modern Curves

I was excited to be able to take a class at the Minnesota Quilt show from Carole Lyles Shaw.  She is an expert on modern quilts.   She is also an Electric Quilt 8 user and Tech Know Quilter member.   I recommend her blog and any of her classes.

I will be sharing one of her designs and many of Carole's tips in Modern Quilts 2.  Tech Know Quilters should watch for this class.
PictureOne of Carole Lyle Shaws Mid Centery Modern Quilts
The class I took from Carole was Mid Century Modern Curves.  She created a spectacular black and white version of her concept.  The quilt won a prize at MidAtlantic Quilt Festival Competition for "Best Use of Negative Space in the MidCentury Modern Category".

(Click on the photo of her quilt to link to her blog post.  You can also see her award- winning quilt.)

I joined Carole's class with a stack of ombre fat quarters and a background fabric.  I used her sew, slice, re-position method to create three full blocks.  As an added bonus I created 2 partial blocks from the left-over pieces.

This was definitely outside of my comfort zone -- but I am pretty happy with my blocks.

Picture
Kari's Pieced Blocks from Carole's Mid Century Modern Class
I am much more comfortable with a bit of structure.   I decided to use EQ to audition my blocks in a quilt layout

I had two options.  Option 1:  Redraft the blocks using EasyDraw.   However, I realized it wasn't necessary.  Option 2:  Take a perfect square photos of each of the blocks.  Then import into Electric Quilt.

I needed to do a bit of cropping and distorting in PhotoShop.  Then I saved the  images in My EQ8>Images folder.   Check on my tutorial on using PhotoShop here.

In the free video I include:
  • Importing the photos of my Mid Century Modern Quilt Curves blocks into Electric Quilt
  • Modifying some photos to create fabric.
  • Using the photos and fabrics in a quilt layout.
I wanted to label the photo below -- "Is it live, or is it Memorex?"  Does the fact that I remember the old commercial date me?
Picture

Note -- The above photo is actually my Electric Quilt 8 rendition of my quilt center.

Next I need to find some time to work on the borders.

Quantum Leap Quilt

6/15/2019

This will be a short post -- as today I will be teaching Introduction to EQ8 at the MN Quilt Show in Rochester.  I will be touring the exhibits during my lunch break.  If you see me, please stop and say "hi".

Drafting the Quantum Leap On Point Quilt

Last week I shared how to draft three original nine patch blocks using EasyDraw.  These blocks have a lot of movement as the designs spin around the center of the nine patch.

I also shared my favorite tools for piecing each of those blocks.  I am a real fan of Deb Tucker's Studio 180 Design tools.  If you love her tools as well, you will want to check out that post.
This week, I designed a quilt utilizing the three nine patch spin blocks,  I knew I wanted an on point layout and will share my favorite way of incorporating all three blocks in a quilt.
If you like to replicate my tutorials, feel free to try some different setting options incorporating three different 9 patch blocks.

I would love to see your design.  Feel free to share on the On Point Quilter page or in the Learning EQ Facebook group.

Quantum Leap

6/8/2019

Drafting 9 Patch Spin Blocks

Do you give yourself design challenges?  This week I challenge myself to draft three new 9 patch quilt blocks.

Here were my Electric Quilt challenge rules:
  • The block needed to have 9 equal sections and be recognized as a nine-patch unit.
  • Draft a new block (nothing that I remembered seeing or using before).
  • Blocks needed to be piecing friendly using tools already in my sewing room.

Quantum Leap Blocks

All of the Quantum Leap blocks were colored using a new fabric collection (Quantum) by Guicy Giuce for Andover.

I've included notes on how I would approach piecing each of these blocks.
Picture
Quantum Leap 1 Designed by Kari Schell
Quantum Leap Star #1 would be easy to piece using the V Block Trimmer from Deb Tucker's Studio 180 Design.  I used the partial V Block unit in my pattern Whim Wham Stars.
Picture
Quantum Leap 2 Designed by Kari Schell
Quantum Leap 2 is a variation on Quantum Leap 1.  There are a couple of tools in my collection that would aide in construction.  The Corner Beam Tool (formerly called Spotlight) can be used for the yellow "beam-like" units.  The corners could be done using the Tucker Trimmer.
Picture
Quantum Leap 3 Designed by Kari Schell
Quantum Leap 3 looks a bit like a spinning asteroid.  The corners could be created using the Split Rects tool.  I would use the Square 2 toll for the center.  The half-square triangle units could be done with the Tucker Trimmer.  The corners could be pieced with the Corner Pop.

How would you piece each of these blocks.
Please feel free to use my challenge rules to design new 9 patch blocks.  I would love to see your blocks.  Please feel free to post pictures in one of the Electric Quilt 8 Facebook groups -- or on my page.

Design Your Own Pillow Sham

6/1/2019

PictureKari's New Bed Quilt
Let's start with a very personal question.

How do you make your bed in the morning?
(1) Quilt folded back and over the pillow.
(2) Pillows fluffed and on top of the quilt
(3) Pillow Shams over pillows
(4) I never make my bed

Mom taught me the first method and I used that method through my mid 30s.  Once I started quilting, I realized that folding the quilt back doesn't showcase the quilt well.  And it is much faster to make your bed when using pillow shams.

Since I have a new quilt -- I now need new pillow shams.  I will share with you how you can design your own pillow shams using EQ8.
