Mark your calendars for September 10th.

This is the starting date for a new two week challenge.  During this free challenge I will be presenting both drafting (using EQ8) and piecing instructions for six blocks.

And at the end of the challenge, you will be invited to join a webinar where I will share a number of setting options for your blocks.

Using Custom Set in EQ8

Custom Set in Electric Quilt 8 can sometimes seem scary to use.  Custom Set is the layout that gives you a blank canvas and you  can put your blocks where ever you want on that canvas.

Learn my tricks for creating a small quilt layout with two sizes of blocks.  It is  very doable.  The layout is perfect for populating with any three and six inch blocks.

In the video I include drafting the bow tie and maple leaf blocks and then  including them in the custom set layout.
Here are the quilts from the video.

Linda Carlson I'm making a T-Shirt Quilt for my granddaughter, Emma, to take to college. I changed the dimensions to fit an XL twin bed. The print fabrics will more than likely change, substituting colors for the school she chooses.
Picture
Linda Carlson I have some Paula Nadelstern panels and coordinating fabrics that I used for the panel lessons, and this is the result.

Carole Fox The Mix and match Medallion Borders class was all about measurements and calculations. I enjoyed that and the modern twist of one of the medallion.I tried to make my own using one of the blocks we produced with serendipity. One version with white background, one with black background.
Picture
Sandy Roberts I decided to make this a quilt size. (Inspired by a quilt in Modern Quilts.)
Picture
Curryanne Hostetler PolyDraw was a struggle but I learned. This design I saw on Pintrist but I took the idea and put it in EQ with poly draw. I have to say to get the little piece took for ever to figure out the size. I thought it would make a great table topper
Picture
Wanda Jewell I am taking Hexagon Blocks and Settings this month. This is my Challenge quilt for the month. I learned quite a bit. How to get the alignment tools on the screen was great. Making the distorted hexagon that looked like dragon scales? , It was cool learning how to make some block motifs for the scales and the jewels. I used my create serendipity and some of the blocks we used as well as motifs and threads to make this quilt.
Picture
Holly Wilson I am taking the Modern Quilts 2 and in the Masters. The thing that I learned that has helped me a lot was to use the arrows on the keyboard to help move a block into place. I wondered what would happen if I moved the tile block on point. It took time and several tries, it worked best when I centered the first block and then worked from there.
Picture
Janet Inglis Thank you Kari for a wonderful class. I've learnt so much I think some of what I've learned has leaked out. I definitely need to go over it again. I recolored the quilt we worked on..
Picture
Julie Pedersen I am doing the Masters Class and Modern Quilts 2 this month. I revisited the Medallion Borders lessons and created this one using various blocks from the lessons I have done.
Picture
Julie Pedersen I used the section tool to capture the center of the quilt so you could see it better.

Carolyn Block Loved this lesson! I am doing Masters Modern Quilts 2 Lesson 12 Brickworks...fun!!
Picture
Joy Hegglund From Modern Quilts 2
Picture
Suzanne Golden This was a fun class. never thought I would be interested in making a Bargello. For this quilt I used merge and serendipity with the curved log cabin.
Picture
JoAnne Scharn I used a lesson from the TKQ Modern Quilts 2 transparency class to create a quilt using what is probably my favorite block, the Ohio Star, with some of the many possible variations that can be drawn using that block as a basis. I believe I could actually stitch this quilt.
Picture
Dorothee Ilgner I was in the Modern Quilt 2 class, where we learned to draft a Bauhaus inspired Quilt. I had a great aunt, who actually studied at the Bauhaus in the years 1921 - 1923. She is a role model for me for lifelong learning and determination. She was born 1870 to a german-baltic family in Riga, Latvia. She studied art and painting in Riga. Around 1900 she went to Italy and Germany and became a master student with Adolf Hoelzel and taught classes. Because Riga was in Russia at this time, she was not allowed to teach during WW1. So she taught privately those, who were not allowed to study officially. Josef Itten was one of her pupils. When she went to Bauhaus, she was over 50 years old. Itten was her teacher there. She also learned carpet weaving. That helped her to make a living when her paintings were forbidden in the years after 1932. To honor her I designed a quilt after one of her carpets. Do you see the patches that are similar to quilt blocks? I think if she had known quilts she would have loved to make them.
Picture
Kathy Delaney Wow! My mind is blown! I took the Masters Modern Quilts 2 class. I was fascinated by the Fibonacci Quilt so I played with that some. I wondered what it would look like to take the original block, resize it and put it in one element of the block, resize it again and place it in the same element of the second block. I placed the resized blocks on the second layer. I kept the same coloring so it would seem to be in a "hall of mirrors." While I am not much of a "modern quilter," this is one I might consider making.
Picture
Sharon Osborne A Modern quilt I designed for July. I'd like to make this one! Loved learning all these layouts.
Picture
Kristy Goodin Soard My challenge quilt for TKQ Modern Quilts 2. I was inspired by a quilt I saw on a blog, Stitch by Stitch Custom Quilting. The blogger teaches longarm quilting classes, and had quilted my inspiration quilt beautifully. In my quilt I was sure to leave plenty of open space for some luscious quilted feathers. I also implemented Kari's "highlighting a single block" process, however, I did not create this in custom set.
Picture
Rick Danner Eleanor Gets an Update This lesson was the bomb! I had so much fun with the Eleanor's applique block I went ahead with all 12 blocks then set them in a really fun quilt setting.

Joyce Drenth

I have been working on a Northwest Suburban Quilters Guild (NSQG) challenge quilt as a component of our upcoming Time Flies Quilt Show. Challenge requirements include: use 4 ruby (40th anniversary gem) flying geese blocks to celebrate four decades, add embellishments, meet AQS Ultimate Guild Challenge competition size requirements, and showcase a personal reflection of how 'Time Flies".

My design uses 40 wedges. After incorporating the four ruby blocks, each of the remaining 36 geese blocks chronologically document the quilt style and completion date of a selection of my quilts. I photographed my quilts and resized the pictures to fit into the 40 wedges. This quilt serves as a documentation of my quilting journey through time so that pictures of my quilts are captured in one place. It also keeps my 'goals' front and center for the future.

I drew the shoe, bucket and scissors after taking Kari’s applique class. I then proceeded to sew a 3-D bucket, wool pincushion, beaded strawberry, high-heeled shoe, scissor hands applique'd over Peltex, yo-yos for the 4 quadrants of the clock face, clock and hourglass charms, beads and a bucket list of yet-to-be-completed quilt styles flowing out of the bucket. Forty ruby prairie points celebrate NSQG's 40th anniversary year. The 4 o'clock charms and the scissor hands reflect the 4 decades of our guild's existence.
Challenge quilts were displayed and voted upon last night at our guild meeting. I’m happy to report that I won first place.

Quick Lone Star Quilt

8/24/2019

Creating a lone star quilt design in Electric Quilt 8 is super simple.  This quilt has only two blocks (and one comes from the Electric Quilt library).  And the other can be drafted in under a minute -- promise!

Then use a current fabric collection to color the quilt.  I used the free fabric of the month collection for August 2019 on the Do You EQ Website.  The collection is Rosemary Cottage by Andover.  Have you found this collection in your favorite quilt store?
Here is the quilt from the video.

There is No Place Like Home

8/17/2019

Check out some of the latest challenge submissions by Tech Know Quilter Master members.

Then scroll down to learn how to create a school house quilt using EQ8.  Just in time for back to school.

There is No Place Like Home

A couple of months ago we added a level in Tech Know Quilters for more advanced users.  This group is given an opportunity to focus more on their own projects and designs, while still receiving support and encouragement.

During July, this group was challenged to create a block or quilt around the theme Home.  Here are the results from the challenge.
Picture
Adrienne Quinlan I came across this picture by John Kelly of the bridge in my fathers home town of Killaloe in Ireland. I loved the shadows. I divided each of the elements into 4 and these each measure 16in square, the small squares measure 1in so I should be able to make them bargello style. This version measures 72in square including the borders.
Picture
Wanda Hizer This is the Row by Row I designed for our local quilt shop a year or so ago. The theme was Home Sweet Home. I also wrote and diagrammed the pattern for them. I've done all their Rows since 2016 and I design several block of the month programs for them, too. This picture is the actual pieced row. The big chicken is an actual landmark and is a KFC restaurant.
Picture
Joyce Drenth I had been planning to do a Birds of a Feather Flock Together family heritage quilt with a modern flair. So I drafted some blocks prior to this challenge. I have since changed my mind about the ancestry plan but I have many birds already stitched. Perhaps this Home Sweet Home quilt will allow me to use them and have a cute little quilt after all.
Picture
Caroline Block
Picture
Kristy Goodin Soard When I hear the word "home," I inevitably envision my forever home... Heaven. I chose to represent this feeling with a cherub. The photo that inspired me came from a cherub on a tombstone.
Picture
Kathy Autry I created a quick block of a asymmetrical house and placed it and a Deb Tucker block into a irregular grid quilt from EQ. My house was designed as a 6 x12 and when placed in other size blocks it became even more distorted. So this is my House of Mirror's Quilt.
Picture
Susan Sorensen I'm making a wedding quilt for my assistant's daughter, I don't know her well, so it has been a real challenge which I have been pondering since January. This challenge has been a real motivator. Her favorite color is olive green, not something I would ordinarily use except as an accent color, if ever. And the wedding is now only 4 months away, so I have to limit the complexity of the blocks. I designed about 10 quilts for this project, but when the mother of the bride saw this one in EQ she said this is the one. I plan to use a several tone on tone green and blue fabrics for the main half rectangle triangles and a variety of low volume fabrics for the background, some will be half rectangle triangles. I'll quilt more of the triangle shapes into the background. Have EQ designs with and without 1 inch sashing, will decide about sashing after some of the blocks are on the design wall.
Picture
Holly Wilson My mom would say, "home is where you hang your hat". Thought I would make a block with this in mind. Clip art helps with coat rack. and hats. Had to recall how to add the text.
Picture
Sharon Osborne I hope mine is legal since I did design this a few months back but never showed it. I was involved in a "Home" Challenge with another group I belong to and this is what I designed. I'm from Colorado so that is the reason for the Colorado flag.. Trees for the mountains and earth for our big home. □
Picture
Dorothy Ilgner the inspiration for my Home-Quilt came from a photo of my cat sitting on the windowsill. she was a stray and I rescued her in the middle of winter. She is happy with her new home but the best thing is the bowl of food.
Picture
Joy Hegglund Mountains, water trees and flowers make home..
Picture
Marlene Steimel This design was inspired by a water color piece Heaven Migration by Ginger Noe, a friend. The Background is a manipulated photo of a nebula taken by NASA.I don't feel I am done with it yet.
Picture
Sarah B. started with Bauhaus Strings from Modern Quilts 2. With a few changes (coloring) I did a landscape house quilt. It just amazes me that combining different applications from different lessons and come up with still another quilt.
Picture
Mary Landon Mine is super simple, but it was a good way to reinforce the custom set lessons. I have been wanting to make one like this to use up scraps, and I think this will be really easy.
Picture
Julie Pedersen I made the house block and the heart is from the EQ library.
Picture
Curryanne Hostetler This is a quilt I did for my daughter.
Picture
Kathy Autry This is a quilt that I just finished FMQ on this month . Now I just need to do the binding. It is a Xmas gift for my grandaughter who just decorated her bedroom around Artic Wolf theme. I went back to Kari's classes on using a panel and then put it into EQ and started designing other blocks in the custom setting. I used a Deb Tucker quilt "Rangeley Wall Quit" as the start of my design and put two of her star blocks into my quilt. I love to do FMQ so I put in lots of negative space and created my own designs in those blocks. I did a lot of FMQ on the panel hoping to give depth to the picture. I used Hobbs wool and quilters dream for batting to help give the panel a trapunto look.

Back to School

Many parts of our country are already sending kids back to school.  And if the kids aren't back, the teachers are probably busy preparing for their new classes.  This quilt is in honor of teachers and school workers.

It is a two color red and white quilt -- so super simple to color.  And a fun quilt to piece once the drafting is done.
Here is the school house quilt from the video.  The quilt finishes 31" x 29".

Farmers Market

8/10/2019

I love going to the Farmer's Market this time of the year.  The fresh veggies are a real treat.  My trip to our local Farmers Market  inspired the quilt for this blog post.
The medallion layout with four pieced baskets and the border were designed in a previous blog post.

If you missed the post, you can locate it here.

Sewing Basket Medallion by Kari Schell
This week we will add fruit and veggies to our baskets.  All the applique elements came from the Electric Quilt library -- so no drawing skills are required for this quilt.

Once the applique was added to the medallion block, it needed to be resized and rotated and layered under parts of the basket.

How to do that is covered in this free video tutorial.
Here is the quilt from the video.  I used Twilight Chic from Island Batik to color the quilt.  This fabric collection was one of the free Fabric of the Month downloads from Do You EQ.

Sewing Basket Medallion

8/3/2019

I had my second cataract surgery yesterday.  At my doctors visit this morning I was back to 20/25 with the expectation to get to 20/20.  And I am working on the computer without glasses!  This is the first time in many years.  I am so thankful for modern medical advances.

My world has become so much brighter.  I am looking forward to getting back to quilting -- which had become somewhat frustrating with the reduced clarity in my vision.

Special thanks to Sherry Perry and Diane Rose who threaded by sewing machine needle when working with mono-filament thread during my last quilting retreat.  Quilting friends are the greatest.  Maybe I will be able to return the favor next year.
Picture
Tree Wall Quilter created by Kari Schell (design source unknown)
One of the things I was enjoying this morning was this quilt I made eons ago.  I am not sure if it was a purchased pattern or an adaption of something I saw.  But I loved how the four on point blocks came together for this medallion style quilt.
For this weeks tutorial I decided to play with a different on point block from the EQ library and create a new version of this this quilt.  And I did this without using Custom Set.  Can you guess how?
Here is the quilt from the video.  I used the free fabric of the month collection from Electric Quilt to color the quilt.  The fabric collection is Icicle by Kathy Engle for Island Batik.
Picture
For fun consider trying this with a different on point block.  I would love to see pictures of your design.
