Heads up -- there is a brand new Tech Know Quilter's class starting on March 2nd. Read more below.
But first -- the final installment on the Winter's Game Quilt...
During the past month, I've shared a number of posts to honor those in the winter Olympics. In today's post, we will cover two additional blocks in the Winter Games quilt plus the quilt layout.
Alternate Block 1 Interlocking Friendship Rings
This block was originally designed in 2016. As a result the video tutorial for drafting the block is for EQ7 -- but for those familiar with EQ8 the techniques are easily adapted. Feel free to import the following block for tracing.
Alternate Block 2 - Winter Games Snowflake Block
The Winter Games Snowflake block was started by bringing in the Hexagonal block from the EQ8 Library. I deleted 6 lines and added six new lines. Turn on Snap to Node to add the additional lines. This one is super fast to draft. This block would be best pieced by using templates. Winter Games Quilt Layout
See how to create the layout using Electric Quilt 8 in my current video tutorial.
Here is the final quilt presented with the Winter's Game fabrics from Benartex.

All of this will be presented in 13 Easy Peasy video tutorials of 5-10 minutes. A video tutorial plus detailed step by step instructions will be sent to your inbox every Monday/Wednesday and Friday. Here are just a few of the 30+ medallion centers you will create in this class.

My all-time favorite Olympic sport is Ice Dancing. I love the intricacies of the step sequences and how in sync the partners must be at all times. The beauty of these teams is spell-binding.
I took up figure skating a few years ago and am a member of a social ice dance club -- so I can appreciate how hard this sport is. Even the patterned dances I am working on are a challenge to stay on time and in sync with a partner. Full disclosure -- there are no twizzles, lifts or throws in social ice dance. I spend most of my time working on three turns and Mohawks. I ended up creating two blocks. The first is an ice dance couple. I found that by eliminating the guy, I was able to create a female figure skater block as well. Feel free to trace my blocks to create your own foundation patterns.
Here is the video tutorial for the first block.

The opening exercises for the winter Olympics was last night and I am already hooked. I was up way too late on Wednesday evening watching curling -- the chess like game of the Olympics according to one of the commentators. Curling was a gym class in high school so I thought I understood the game -- but we pretty much just threw the stone down the ice and hoped for the best.
It took me quite a few attempts to get a curling image I actually liked that was reasonably easy to foundation piece. Here is my ending pattern. Please feel free to download it for tracing if you wish to replicate my block.
In the free video tutorial I take you though sectioning and drafting this block. I also made a mistake and selected the wrong block type (EasyDraw rather than EasyDraw plus Applique). I will also share will you my trick for fixing that problem.
My Attempt at Winter Sports
On a personal note, while on vacation earlier this week, I made it out cross country skiing. Yes that is frost on my eyebrows and eyelashes. The weather was a little frigid. I think I will stick with skating at the indoor rinks in Minneapolis.

Tech Know Quilters February Training
Month 2 of Tech Know Quilters has officially launched with a choice of two classes. It is still not too late to join us.
It is also ok to start even if you didn't enroll in the Working with Fabric Images class in January. Each month can be viewed independent of the other classes. What’s Included?
Option 1: Introduction to Easy Draw
One of the things we all want to be able to do is either draw our own blocks or recreate blocks from patterns we own to allow us to audition fabrics or even swap out one piecing technique with another. EasyDraw is the most useful drawing tools in Electric Quilt as most quilt blocks are designed based on square grids. It also is the method that is closest to working with pencil and graph paper.
Benefits:
Option 2: Easy Draw Kaleidoscopes
An advanced class that focuses on EasyDraw Kaleidoscopes for intermediate level EasyDraw block drafters.
Benefits: 1. Learn to draft Kaleidoscope blocks based on an octagon grid (both on point and square octagons) as well as a hexagon grid. 2. Learn to identify snap options that work for these quilts based on a circular grid. 3. Learn how to use striped fabric to create gorgeous kaleidoscopes. 4. Learn to turn log cabin blocks into hexagon motifs and then set those motifs in a custom set layout. Shoot for the Stars with EQ8
