Mitten Quilt Layout Plus Tech Know Quilters Electric Quilt Project Showcase

1/25/2020

Scroll down for a new tutorial on creating a quilt layout for a mitten quilt plus the sale on the just released Snow Couple pattern.

Tech Know Quilters Showcase

Current Tech Know Quilter Members were challenge to apply what they learned at the end of their December class.  Although December was a busy month, I was impressed with how many rose to the challenge.
Picture
Joy Hegglund A modification of a design by Elizabeth Hartman. It uses folded corners. For the month of January Elizabeth Hartman is donating the price of the PDF pattern to a wildlife rescue in Australia. I figured that was a very good reason to buy the pattern and then use EQ8 to figure out what I wanted to do with it.
Picture
Nancy Messuri I used the challenge block from the Lesson 11 Hexagon class to create this quilt center. Then added a background and border. I am so happy to have learned so many new ways to draw in PolyDraw!
Picture
Marlu Allan -- loves working with the serendipity tool.
Picture
Rhonda Goss -- A serendipity tool variation.
Picture
Kathleen Scargle McCormick Nancy Cabot's column in the Chicago Tribune on June 12, 1933-Seacoast Towns of Maine Home of Fish Design. I rather loved this block and here it is from Maine, where I spend quite a bit of time on an island.
Picture
Kathleen Scargle McCormick I think this is one to be made! I wanted to use some of the 2020 Pantone Blues I collected and just used some oranges. May go with other colored fish at some point
Picture
Joy Hegglund I haven't had much time for EQ lately, but came across a picture on Pinterest and decided to play.
Picture
Julie Pedersen I created a table topper using techniques from the folded corners class and blocks that I had done in previous lessons.
Picture
Carole Fox I worked very hard on Hexagon lesson 13. It was a challenge doing the binding as well as assembling the hexagons.
Picture
Tina Rohde I am working my way through the Mix and Match Medallions class. Wanted to try creating a pattern for a wedding coming up - luckily in 15 months. Fell in love with the Treasures of Alexandria fabric by Robert Kaufman. I created the center as a quilt to fussy cut the fabric.
Picture
Pam Varner From Specialty Rulers and Dies class . This is the Spider Web from Accuquilt.
Picture
Karen Neal Caught up in poly draw. The lessons helped tremendously. I had tried it in EQ7 and struggled. But thanks Kari this was much more understandable.

Suzanne Golden This month I was working with foundations. I love to paper pieces so this was fun. Cabin in the Woods was designed after our tree class and I went search for more trees.
Picture
Suzanne Golden Heart and Home was my last project for the month. I may make some additional modifications.
Picture
JoAnna Rogers I completed the Bargello class in December. I have learned so much in your classes and I’m so grateful that I can keep them and go back to them at anytime. Our guild members are making Quilts of Valor for the veterans who are flying on a Honor flight in May. I designed this quilt using what I learned in your class. Thank you!
Picture
Carol Mallozzi Kari, all your lessons have given me the courage to explore an older book and this is what I ended up with.
Picture
Maureen Pinwill I have been working on Mix and Match Medallions.
Picture
Pam Varner Gees Bend Challenge Quilt This is so difficult for me as the process fights with my analytical mind. I decided to combine this attempt with my Accuquilt dies.
Picture
Chris Deering One result of Mix and Match Borders Lesson 3. I have a completed applique center similar to this, so maybe this quilt will become a reality someday!
Picture
Renee Stacy I purchased this kit from Whimms Water Colors. I just completed the Cross and its tiny squares in the middle. Just a little playing and by adding two borders to it, this is my idea for a twin size, perfect for my mother's bed.
Picture
Nancy Messuri -- Foundation Tree Challenge. "Blue Christmas" using Kathy Engle's Icicle fabrics.
In December, Masters Members were challenged to examine a historic block and re-draft so that it was easy to piece using folded corner methodology.  Here are the quilts from the members who rose to the challenge.

The suggested blocks were Ararat and Giddap blocks by Evaline Foland in 1931.
Picture
Joyce Drenth I redrew each of the animal blocks and created a different combination of row-by-row type filler blocks for this custom set quilt.
Picture
Julie Pedersen -- Elephant Challenge
Picture
Kristy Goodin Soard Thanks for the challenge Kari. It was just what I needed to master the skill of folded corners. I hope Evaline would approve of the liberty I took with her design. I like to think of my parents who were just youngsters when she designed her original quilt. I am imagining the triangle border made of a nice red wool.
Picture
Kristy Goodin Soard Applying the Master's Folded Corners class, I chose to reproduce a design I found in a book, Pennsylvania Patchwork Pillowcases and Other Small Treasures, by Ann R. Hermes. It is the Sawtooth pillowcase thought to be made in 1830-1840 and of unknown provenance. It was originally 15.5" x 23.5", but I chose to design it to fit a standard size pillowcase today. I stayed true to the rotation of her HSTs even when I probably would have chosen a different rotation, as well as just clipping to the edge the HSTs on the back versus adapting the size to fit the back. I also maintained the rotation of the stripe in the center block, requiring me to use the advanced rotation fabric tool. I used her red and white color scheme, appropriate to this season, and chose the fabrics from the July-Dec 2011 Get Ready for Fall line. I feel certain the maker did not use the folded triangle method for piecing, but it works perfectly for this application.

Charlotte Quiroz I did it! I took this picture and re-created the quilt in EQ8. After I looked at the pattern and the way the author explained to assemble the blocks...there was no way in EQ to assemble the pieces. BUT, In EQ I designed the blocks a bit differently and Eureka, it worked!

Who's Got the Mitten Quilt

In this video tutorial, I share a quilt option for the Mitten block drafted during the last blog post.  If you missed the previous tutorial, you can watch here.
After choosing an on point layout, I decided the open spaces called for some "winter" applique.  I share how to convert an applique block to a motif for use in the quilt.
Snow Couple Calendar QuiltThe mitten block pieces could all be cut with squares and rectangles constructed using folded corner techniques.  Learn more about creating your own folded corner cutting charts here.

If you would like to use your electronic cutting system to cut out the snowflake blocks, see my method here.

I am way behind on doing some of your blog classes but am slowly catching up. I have a question about downloading fabric jpegs from manufacturer's sites. Once you extract the jpegs into a My EQ8/images files. Do you keep this file or do you delete it once the fabric is in the My Favorite fabric library?

Elaine -- you can delete the fabric images on your computer once you import them into EQ.
