Last Minute Gift Idea - Christmas Angel or Christmas Pie Table Topper

12/20/2014

I told myself that I wasn't going to do a Christmas quilt this year. I still haven't even put up the tree and I will be picking up Mom and Uncle John on Sunday for a week long visit, with my sister and her family coming from Missouri on Wednesday.  There is always so much going on.  But I really wanted to show how to draft a hexagon quilt in Electric Quilt and I decided this is a really easy project

So I couldn't resist.  I have two table topper options for you.

The video on how I drafted this quilt in EQ is here.  It is less complicated than it looks.

Rotary cutting charts for the blocks are here.  Sizing is exact (i.e. no oversized pieces).

For the borders use 1-1/2" strips for the sashing (4 1-1/2” x 7" and 4 1-1/2” x 8”)and 2-1/2" strips for the outer border (4 2-1/2” x 12” and 4 2-1/2” x 8”).  I have a few diagrams on piecing the borders.
Picture
Add 1-1/2" x 7" sashing to four corners.

Trim using the outsides edges of your block as the guide. (Note that the picture is shown without seam allowances.)

Add 1-1/2" x 8" sashing strips to four sides.

Trim the outside edges using the previous set of sashing strips as your guide.
Picture
Repeat the process by adding the 2-1/2" x 8" strips on the four corners. Trim using the sashing as a guide.

Then add the 2-1/2" x 12" strips to all four sides and trim using the previous border as a guide.
If this is a Christmas gift, you can stitch in the ditch and it will be done in a jiffy.

Happy quilting -- and Merry Christmas.

Great video, Kari. I didn't understand when to use patchdraw, I can see where this is handy.

That was so fun! The Christmas music inserts were delightful too! Of course I am going back now to step the process out and make my own from your tutorial but thanks Kari. I enjoy getting your email tutorials each week. (side note - the thumbs are healing nicely from surgery - I can type now. I think I'd enjoy making up the table topper for next year and having it for my circle dining room table through the holidays - thanks again!)

I like this a lot. The construction pictures makes it look a lot like putting a log cabin block together or more accurately a pineapple block. Thanks.
