What to Do with a Goose

9/21/2019

A flying goose unit is one of the most frequently used units in quilting.

See what participants of the Goose Goose Duck challenge did with this unit and watch the video for the last block in the challenge.

And then be inspired by what some Tech Know Quilter Master's members did with half square triangles.

Goose Tracks

It is hard to believe we are almost at the end of the Goose Goose Duck Challenge.  Today we are presenting block 6 for the challenge.

10/18/2019 Update:  Video has been removed and is only available to those in Tech Know Quilters.   You can sign up for the Tech Know Quilter Wait List here.
Here is the image referred to in the video.  You can download the image and save it to the My EQ8>Images folder if you would like to trace the block.

In addition to learning how to draft the block, you can also learn how to draft the following layout as well.

August Half Square Triangle Challenge

Members of Tech Know Quilters Masters participated in a challenge to design a quilt around the theme -- Half Square Triangles.  Here are their designs.  Check out their creativity.

JoAnne Scharn
Picture
Wanda Hizer My half square triangle quilt. It has 256 half square triangles each are 2" squares. I actually made this quilt sometime ago using those vary fabrics. Loved it. I don't own it anymore. I made it for my local quilt shop.

Joy Hegglund My challenge quilt, 1060 half square triangles
Picture
Carolyn McCready This is a layout quilt I design many years ago but never finished! Now have put some final touches and came up with this. There are 292 HST in this 4x4 block layout and one border. Maybe some day I will make it.
Picture
JoAnn Hoffman I like looking for old quilts on Ebay and trying to remake them in EQ8.

Picture
Leanne Neilson I designed this quilt to use left over black and white pieces I'd cut for another quilt. It has 244, 5 inch HST
Picture
Leanne Neilson This quilt uses 2 blocks from the library alternating to make an interesting secondary design. Each block has 16, 2.5 inch HST.
Picture
Shann Wheaton There are 576 half square triangles in the small block for the border (16x36) and 64 in the large block. There are strip pieced half square triangles in the large blocks, which when layed together look like square blocks. I made this up on my own just playing around with easy draw and then symmetry. What a fun project it turned out to be.

Mary Landon This is my submission for the challenge. I took the easy way out and used blocks from the library. I believe there are 352 HSTs.

Holly Wilson My challenge 272 1/2 square triangles

Picture
Kristy Goodin Soard Sometimes more is better.....I used 400 HSTs for the background.
Picture
Kathleen McCormick I played and rotated triangles so I had different designs. 210 HST.

Picture
Debbi Treusch I was on vacation in the Colorado mountains during challenge week. I went to the Indian Cliff Dwellings in Manitou Springs and noticed a lot of half square triangles in the museum displays. So my challenge is influenced by the southwest. It was quick and fun quilt to make!! The Kokopelli applique came from an EQ library.
Picture
Debbi Treusch Did you catch that this is a 2 X 2 horizontal quilt? Here's the block. I started with a 6 X 6 block and set the Kokopelli at 45 degrees. Then used serendipity to frame the block in a frame that put the Kokopelli on point, surrounded by HST's. The final Kokopelli was set in the quilt where the 4 blocks come together to create the alternate design.

Goose Goose Duck Challenge Quilts

Here are some of the quilts that were shared this past week  in the Learning EQ Facebook Group.  Feel free to click on the link and request to join the Facebook Group (if you aren't already a member).

As you look at the quilts, notice the different fabrics and colors used in the quilts.  Some quilters were even inspired to try different layouts and different border designs.  I love being able to look at every one of these and enjoy the creativity of those in the challenge.

Oh so much fun to look at these creations. I absolutely hate making flying geese but love what everyone came up with. Looking at everyone's designs for both challenges motivated me to do some more quilting! Thanks everyone:)

I am currently doing TKQ classes but do not do Facebook. Is there
anyway that I can include my EQ8 ideas when you do these website
showings? Can I send the images directly to your site?

Kari

Helen -- If you are participating in one of the TKQ Challenges such as the month-end Apply What You Learned , just send a note directly to me with a copy of your challenge project. I have a few people in the group who don't do FB that will send me their images from EQ. Just reply to the email that announces the challenge.
