Tech Know Quilters Showcase July Apply What you Learned Challenge Projects

We have added challenges to the Tech Know Quilters program. 

During this challenge, Tech Know Quilter members were asked to "Design your own quilt to apply what you learned during the current month. This could be as simple as using a different color palette than what was used in the lessons.  Or changing the quilt layout for blocks designed during the lesson -- or something totally different.  Let your creativity reign."

As I was uploading the quilts to this blog post, I was amazed at the creativity expressed by these wonderful quilters.  There were a couple of members who even got started in transferring their designs to fabric.

Carolyn McCready Spiral Art Block in a layout from library and an auto border with my own colouring choices. Loved this class.

Dotty Smalley I call this quilt Experimental Curves. It is a block I came up with after taking Modern Quilts in July 2018. I learned so much in this class it is difficult to summarize, but most of all I was inspired to experiment.

Micheline Herzan The Modern Quilt Lessons turned out to be my favourite. I recoloured and drew a new quilt using block from lesson 12.

Lynette Lloyd Wilson My challenge for the July modern quilts challenge was a fun application of Lesson 9. I chose to make it a simple design with my daughter's dogs picture who are very much the center of attention which is what I call this small quilt.

Mary Montayne This design is quite simple actually but I like it and might make it. I learned so much as always, but what I what I really loved about this particular class was to challenge my own creativity by using someone else's design as an inspiration and go from there. (Gee's Bend challenge). So, I found a design I liked (next photo) photo) and used it for a jumping off place for my design. (this photo). Thanks again, Kari, for another high quality class.

Sharon Lillie Berman From the Modern Quilts lessons, a combo of the flying geese, the Spiral art and the log cabin. Learned a lot about maneuvering blocks with the custom layout. I wasn't sure I would like the Modern quilt lessons but it is actually one of my favorites so far! Thanks Kari!

Paula Miceli This quilt is a result of the Modern Quilts class. New things that I learned during this class included using different snap settings to create uneven lines to simulate a crazy quilt look and also simulating quilting using motifs and thread tools. I learned much more about using Custom Set and also gained more experience using the Arc Drawing Tool.

Kristy S. I took the Modern Quilts class this month, and as always learned a multitude of tips and techniques from Kari Schell.

D M Hebert Blue Christmas Fabric Images class -- In this quilt I used the photo editing, line drawing, borders, and I scanned the actual fabric I will be using in the quilt.

Dora Ilgner (from Germany) I made a rather minimalistic quilt, inspired by the song 'aguas de marco' from tom jobin. I designed the middle block as a long stripe and one smaller square block with the small rectangles. than I arranged them in a striped layout with three stripes, and a different kind of layout in each stripe.

Laura Waskiewicz Sapko My challenge quilt was inspired by poly draw, modern quilts and a song in church.

Marguerite Schrader I took the Modern Quilt Class. For my challenge, I made a variation of the spiral block, and a used some concepts from the 3D blocks to make a directional rectangle. These were then set using a custom layout.

Julie Pedersen I did the Modern Quilt class this month. I decided to use 2 of the blocks we made for Lesson 2. I also tried it with different coloring. I love how the different colors make it look like a different quilt pattern.

Judy Good I wanted to design something simple enough to sew that I would actually make it.

Judy Good This is a quilt that I actually made and is ready for the longarm. I drew it in EQ so I could audition designs.

Joyce Brenton Last month, I took the Modern Quilt Class. I learned that the Custom Set can be lots of fun and will definitely explore it more later. I also became more confident using the arc tool , the snapping options and using the Various options to Create Serendipity. This quilt uses a combination of the Spiral Art block and a Shrink and Flip version of a previous block. The class also gave me more insight into the different options for border styles. Really enjoyed all of the Modern Quilt lessons.

Holly Wilson I never thought that I would like modern quilts, I took the challenge and enjoyed each step, I really enjoyed reading about Gees Bend quilts and chose that as my challenge. Mine is a block I designed, and then used custom quilt set. Manipulation of the block to fill the custom quilt size of 60 x 60. I might just become a modern girl.

Joyce Drenth I was in the Modern Quilt class this month, and the greatest learning lesson for me is growth of exploration. I cannot even remember in which classes I acquire skills, but I find that if one thing does not work, I go back and try another sequence of that great 'bag 'o tricks' that Kari is teaching us! In this Seaweed quilt, i explored in my own way how to create an s-curve with the arc tool, getting them to successfully join. Copying, rotating, flipping, fussy-cutting, deleting segments, etc. The list goes on and on. Thank you, Kari!

 I was so excited to do the month of Modern Quilts. Before the class started I had been working on a couple of designs to make a modern quilt for my home. As the month went on I finalized my design and also have made the quilt  

I want to mention that the small 4" blocks in the quilt are a block that you and Tina Dillard included on one of the April Showers blog posts in April  https://www.onpointquilter.com/blog/april-showers-umbrella-blocks.  I played with this block in EQ8 additionally I saw a block on one of Deb Tuckers Blockbusters Newsletter called Whirligig and drew this block in EQ8.

Janet Kirby This is my modern quilt challenge. This one looks easy to piece and an interesting one to quilt.

Susan Sorenson My modern quilt challenge. Started with overlapping arcs in Easy Draw, then set the blocks on point and changed some of the colors to match the background because it was too busy. The middle border was made with concentric arcs for the corners and parallel S curves for the side. Loved this class.

Cheryl Johnston #1 I Googled "geometric modern design" for ideas and got more than I can ever reproduce in EQ but it was fun to try.

Sharon Osborne Fun, I don't know why this took me so long but I just kept playing. Inspired by a rug I saw. Thought it would be a good modern quilt. I love playing with custom set.

Diane Coble For my challenge, I experimented with setting the circular block in different star patterns. Then is used the spiral block we created and set it in the corners. I tried to create a feeling of depth by using gradations of color in the stripes.

Shann Wheaton Here is my final quilt challenge for modern quilts. Wew! Made it before the deadline. As you all can probably tell, I just love curves and really enjoyed this part of modern quilts. Thanks again Kari.

Jill Farnsworth Maria Baby Quilt I was thrilled to be able to use what I have learned. A friend of mine wanted a baby quilt, southwestern style for her niece who is moving away from New Mexico. Viola! I printed the yardage chart so that she can purchase the fabric that SHE wants me to use and I will make the quilt for her. I love quilting and I love making quilts for other people.
