More Hexagonal Stars

7/16/2016

I am having a lot of fun playing with Hexagonal Stars in Electric Quilt.  I saw a really fun hexagonal layout and knew I needed to use it to design a quilt.  Putting very simple square blocks in a triangle or parallelogram shape can create stunning designs.

Can you guess the "blocks" that were included in this quilt?

The Electric Quilt video tutorial this week will show you how to use and modify one of the hexagonal layouts from the library and then design a 60 degree triangle border to complement the quilt.
I've included some "Quilter's Math" in this video:
  • Calculating the size of Hexagon Quilts (the length and the width are typically different)
  • Creating 60 degree border blocks

Here is the work sheet used in the video.  Don't worry if you are math adverse.  Just go through it one step at a time (just like working through a quilt pattern).

2+6=Easy Quilt Pattern by On Point Quilter
I am heading off for a retreat this weekend and one of the projects I plan to work on is a quick and easy baby quilt.  My go to pattern is 2+6=Easy.

This quilt uses two main fabrics and six fat quarters, making fabric selection a breeze.

At 36" wide, the quilt length can vary from 45"-60" depending on the number of rows you use. Make it your way!

Happy quilting.

Love our Saturday morning tutorials! I learn so much. I'll probably never get the math on them but printed out the pdf's to go with the lesson I wrote out and followed it to create mine with ya. Thanks so much. I rarely get to use my 60 degree triangle! I'm really glad there are mathematicians with the know how and willingness to share. To each is given a talent thanks for sharing yours!

WOW! You make it look so simple! The math does take me down a road I don't often travel but it sure gives my brain a workout. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

Thank you so much. Have watched your video twice now and find it fascinating. My question is whether you'll be leaving this video on your website permanently as I want to be able to refer to it often until I master this skill.

I don't have any current plans to take them down. Long term (thinking 6 months plus) --who knows. It depends on future class offerings.
