Dressed Up Half Square Triangle Blocks in a Pyramid Layout

7/1/2017

Enrollment is now open for two new online Electric Quilt classes.  My new T Shirt and Panel Quilts class will be offered in a webinar format allowing you to take only the pieces of the class you are interested in learning.  Read more below.
Today while researching (i.e. wasting time???) on Pinterest, I came across this antique quilt.  Wouldn't this be a great setting for our dressed up half square triangle blocks?

I knew I needed to try some of my half square triangle blocks in this setting (with a little bit more modern coloring).

If you want to see how to draft the blocks in this quilt, check out part 1 of my Dressed Up Half Square Triangle challenge.
Here is the Electric Quilt layout I used.

New Dressed Up Half Square Submissions

Love the designed half square triangle blocks that readers are sending to me.  Here are the new ones.

T Shirt and Panel Quilt Training Using Electric Quilt 7

You have just been asked to make a t shirt quilt for someone special graduating from high school.  Or you just picked up a spectacular panel at your local quilt shop and don't know what to do with it.  This class will provide you with the information you need to successfully design any t shirt or panel quilt using Electric Quilt 7.

Information will be presented through four separate mini-classes.  Pick the sessions that interest you (or that you need to learn).  Or pick all four for a deep dive into the topic.  Classes will be presented in a webinar format that will provide demonstration of the techniques along with time for questions and answers.

Can't attend the classes (or even just one or two of the classes)?  All enrollees will get a full video of the class plus detailed step by step instructions to recreate items demonstrated in the video.

But the Panama Triangles are not HST's but 60 degree or equilateral triangles.

Judy -- Agree. But sometimes it is fun to set our square blocks in different settings to see other possibilities.

I get a lot of HST shapes, because I often do on point settings on my quilts and that automatically makes a square with a line diagonally with half of it pieced and half plain. I know I could just drop the entire block into the side triangles, but I'd think it would change the yardage needed to complete the blocks. So once I set a square into those side triangles, I delete the lines from half the block. I intended to submit some of them, but have been too crazy busy recently to look for some of the examples.

Yes -- You are correct in how EQ handles the partial blocks in this setting. Obviously this can cause your fabric yardage to be overstated. When I am doing an initial design I don't care as I just am looking for a setting that looks good. But if I am planning to piece the quilt or create instructions, I will create add a dividing line and "delete" the segments" on one side of the line. In that situation I typically color the unused area with an "ugly" fabric so I know not to buy that particularly fabric when I am at the store. I thought I had this in a video -- but can't locate it at the moment.

I think Kari's referring to putting the HSTs (made into squares) into the diamond shaped setting? You can see from her example, the bottom half of the setting is not pieced, but the top half is. I've done this before and I had to get a bit creative to get the shapes I wanted when the square blocks were dropped into the diamond shapes. "I" personally couldn't 'see' it in my head, so had to use trial and error to get the drawing I wanted. The diamond shapes are 4 sided, they're just angled in that setting, instead of being square. The line between the 2 HSTs is the line that makes the diamond shapes into 60 degree triangles. If I'm misunderstanding your statement, my apologies, just ignore me, please.
