Are you enjoying the fall season? The leaves have been slow to fall and have been particularly colorful. Did you know how much fun it can be to make your own leaf foundation pattern? For this weeks tutorial, I will show you how I did so in Electric Quilt. However, even if you don't have EQ, you could still use this technique with a photo and graph paper. I decided to work with a maple leaf. Here is the inspiration photo and my finished block. If you are interested in a free pdf of the maple leaf foundation (6" size), please click here. If you are interested in the EQ7 file, please click here. Happy quilting. Kari Sign up for my newsletter to stay current on what's happening in my studio and learn more quilting tips. As a thank you, I'll send you a FREE pattern for this small maple leaf quilt.

That was beautifully done Kari. I really appreciate your generosity and watching your tutorials has really kept me informed. I have trouble remembering the buttons and snaps; what to switch on and off, and their functions. Watching and listening and taking notes and trying them out keeps them in review. Thank you so much! I look forward to the tutorials each week!

Thank you Kari! I made a foundation pieced leaf some years ago. It was my contribution to a hug quilt a group made for a friend when her husband died. You can see my block here https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=783160378414384&set=a.763367547060334.1073741827.100001612869747&type=1 If you'd like the EQ file, I'm willing to share.

I agree with Lee -- fantastic teaching, Kari. You have such a nice, calm, way about how you talk and move on the screen, and what you mention. You make drawing this block really easy, and as you draw we can see the decisions you're making for how to section the block. Loved it!

Hi- I'm new to paper piecing and was wondering in which order do you piece each section together? Thank you!

Elaine I put the left side of the block together as one section. And did the right side as another section. Then combined the two sections.

I have drawn out something that I want to paper piece but I don't have the program you used to be able to have It do the separations and numbering for me. Any suggestions?

Thx for sharing a PDF of your leaf pattern and your inspiration for the not only the pattern but the colour layout. Spot on! I’m creating my first ever barn quilt and looking forward to using your pattern. It’s simple, and actually looks like it fell from a sugar maple. 🍁
