Catch the Waves Free Challenge for Electric Quilt Newbies

7/15/2017

In talking to people in my classes and online, one thing I hear is "I haven't really learned how to use their EQ software".  Or a variation on the theme -- "I haven't used my software in (insert number) of months (or even years)". or -- "I've tried the software, but it wasn't intuitive".

Can you relate?

There are lots of classes and aides to learning the program.  I offer a number of them through my website and through Electric Quilt University.  But sometimes it is hard to find the time to just get started.
Could you commit to just 10 minutes a day to learn the basics of Electric Quilt?  What if I offer it to you for free?
Note:  This challenge is designed for beginners and those that have not used Electric Quilt for an extended period of time.  My goal is to encourage users to learn the basics so they are comfortable starting to design on their own.

Class Structure
  1. Sign Up for the challenge, using the link below.   (Note that you will also be enrolled in On Point Quilter's weekly newsletter.)
  2. Starting on Monday, July 24th a daily e-mail will be sent to your inbox.  (Those signing up after July 24th will start the challenge the day after they sign up.)
  3. The daily e-mail will provide you with a link to a short video (most are under 5 minutes) you can watch online.  The video will provide you with step by step instructions to draft some part of a mystery Electric Quilt project.
  4. Your challenge is to watch the video and complete the tasks within Electric Quilt
  5. The class will be done in a mystery format.  You must complete all the steps to solve the Electric Quilt mystery.
  6. At the end of 14 days you will have designed a number of blocks (using each of the block drawing types) and a quilt that incorporates these blocks.  The theme is Catch the Waves.
  7. The most significant benefit is that you will now be on track to being a regular user of the program -- just like you promised yourself.
  8. If you have questions as you work through the challenge, feel free to post them on my Facebook business page.  Or if you are a member of Learning Electric Quilt including EQ7 and EQ Stitch Facebook group, you may post your questions there -- as the group is focused on learning all things related to EQ.  If you are an EQ user (or future user) you are also welcome to join this group.

Squares or circles?  What do you see when looking at this quilt?    I love the optical illusion created when working with corner beam units.  Fabric selection is easy.  Quilt may be completed with only four fabrics or may be scrapped using fat quarters or fat eighths.

There are three size options.
The cover quilt (Small) is 50 x 62.  Medium is 62 x 74.  Large is 74 x 98.

This quilt has a very modern look with its angles and white space.

I like your new design. How easy is this quilt to make if you don't quilt much? Easy, medium, or difficult?

Hi Carmen. I would consider this quilt to be advanced beginner. Not your first quilt -- but it could be your second. :)

I have EQ mini - am I able to participate with just the mini version?

Kari Schell
7/20/2017 12:27:19 pm

No. Mini has significantly less features than the full version of the program. For example you can't draw blocks. Since we will be drawing blocks in this challenge, it wouldn't work with mini. The screens are also quite a bit different than EQ7. However, if you are thinking of upgrading, it may give you a feel for some of the differences

How long will the videos be available to watch?

Kari

At this point I have no plans to take them down. So they will be there a while.

I haven't gotten an e-mail from you to confirm my email address and sign-up for the EQ lessons. Could something be not working?

Kari Schell

Everything appears to be working on my end. I would suggest checking your spam folder to see if it is there. If not go ahead and try to sign up again. If it still doesn't work, I need you send me an e-mail through my website with the information you used to sign up (both e-mail and name).

Thank you so much for this class. Even though I had "played" with my EQ, I learned something new each day and it will make it much easier to navigate and design.

Hi. I've only just found your Blog. Is the catch the waves free challenge still available. If not, will you be repeating it in the future. Thanks
