Picture
Welcome to all new and returning visitors to On Point Quilter.  A special welcome to those that are doing the Blue Moon Blog Hop.

Those of you that follow me regularly know that I love Electric Quilt -- and I am passionate about assisting quilters to unleash the power of this amazing software.

So in my free EQ8 video tutorial I will share with you how to use Electric Quilt 8 to create a stunning star quilt with the Blue Moon fabric from Island Batik.

Although this quilt looks complex, note that the blocks in the quilt are actually very paper piecing friendly.  Electric Quilt can easily produce these foundations for you.  Which quilt would you like to make?

About Shoot for the Stars

This challenge is designed for both beginners to Electric Quilt  and those that have just migrated to Electric Quilt 8.  My goal is to encourage you to learn the basics so you are comfortable starting to design on your own.

  1. One week after your purchase of the bundle, an e-mail will be sent to your mailbox on Monday, Wednesday and Friday of each week.
  2. The e-mail will provide you with a link to a short video (most are under 5 minutes) you can watch online.  The video will provide you with step by step instructions to draft some part of an Electric Quilt 8 project.
  3. Your challenge is to watch the video and complete the tasks within Electric Quilt
  4. At the end of the 14 videos you will have designed a quilt in Electric Quilt 8 and will have been introduced to many of the new features in this release.  The theme is Shoot for the Stars with EQ8.
  5. The most significant benefit is that you will now be on track to being a regular user of Electric Quilt 8.

My favorite tool is my Martelli rotating cutting mat. I love version 2 of your quilt. I have EQ7, but never completely learned all of it. Would your class also work on EQ7?

Kari Schell
2/8/2018 07:57:53 am

Yes -- this concept would also work with EQ7. Your program will look a bit different. But the quilt is definitely doable.

Cindy Shelley
2/8/2018 08:16:31 am

My favorite tool is "That Purple Thang".

Cindy Shelley
2/8/2018 08:19:30 am

I love both versions of the quilt, may have to make both!!!

Terri D'Ambrosio
2/8/2018 09:09:27 am

My rotary mat and cutter are my favorite tools. I like both of your star patterns, would have trouble deciding which to make.

Sharon Berman
2/8/2018 09:11:26 am

My favorite quilting tool is the Gypsy Cutting Gizmo. Don't know how I chain pieced before without it!

Jo Scharn
2/8/2018 09:23:49 am

Currently my favorite tool is the Quilters Select rotary cutter from Alex Anderson. At first, I questioned the heavy weight of the cutter, but after using it, I now prefer it to any other cutter I have.

Mary Landis
2/8/2018 09:29:22 am

My favorite quilting tool is EQ8. I am still learning how to use it, but can spend hours having fun working with it. I love seeing a quilt on TV or else where and seeing if I can figure out how to make it, or just designing a new quilt in EQ.

Patti Carey link
2/8/2018 09:32:52 am

I thoroughly enjoy your blog, Kari, and have learned so much about EQ from it. After EQ8, my favorite tool is my Clover slim Hera marker - I use it for "pressing" all my seams.

Jean Wall
2/8/2018 09:48:49 am

My favorite tool is my Studio die cutter by Acuquilt. As much as possible I try to design my quilts around those shapes. Saves hours of time.

Joyce Brenton
2/8/2018 09:57:49 am

Of course my very favourite tool is EQ8 but I spend more time playing than I do Quilting. However I love to learn things even if I never use it in a real quilt.
My second favourite tool has to be my seam ripper — I use it a lot😀

Christi
2/8/2018 10:06:14 am

Only one tool, that's hard. Would have to be the Martelli rotary cutter. Easy on my hand.

Nicola
2/8/2018 10:09:27 am

Love both versions of the quilt Kari. Apart from EQ8 which I am loving my favourite quilting tool is my rotary cutter.

Thank you so much for your brilliant tutorials.

Sandy
2/8/2018 10:16:14 am

My favorite tool is whatever one I am using at that time. Each tool is made for a specific action(s) but quilters have found other ways to use that tool and the results are marvelous. My guild has a member that is instructing guild members on how to use the EQ8 program. It is a wonderful class. We also learn things from each other. Quilting is just so exciting.

Joni
2/8/2018 10:27:21 am

EQ8 is my favorite tool for quilting! The software is so flexible and easy to maneuver, and packed with great features. Learning the software with Kari's Tech Know Quilters classes has been fantastic!! Just a few minutes a day and I already feel very comfortable with EQ8.

Patricia Salvant
2/8/2018 10:27:34 am

My Favorite quilting tool is a pair of very pointy eyebrow tweezers, They can catch a wayward seam and hold it over as I stitch past (like at a cross seam, they double as an awl.

carolyn montgomery
2/8/2018 10:30:35 am

my favorite quilting tools are the add a quarter ruler for paper piecing and the measuring gauge from clover.

Girard
2/8/2018 10:37:00 am

My favorite quilting tool, after my new sewing machine, is EQ8 and the TKQ classes with you Kari! In few minutes a day, I can dream of all those quilts I don't have the time to do! :-D

Diane Coble

Absolutely loving your Tech Know Quilters class! Having way too much fun playing with Kaleidoscopes! My favorite quilting tool is my rotary cutter. (I remember quilting before they were invented!)

Marietta Beckham
2/8/2018 10:43:35 am

I don't think I could piece quilts without a bamboo stiletto for holding down those seam joins or tricky points. It's my favorite tool.

Theresa
2/8/2018 10:47:49 am

My new favorite tool is the "Tucker Trimmer". I love how easy it makes getting pieces so precise for a much more accurate block and overall quilt.

Sue
2/8/2018 10:52:00 am

My favorite is the bloc lock ruler to trim HST. It really lowers the stress to make these oversized and trim them.

Ila link
2/8/2018 10:52:16 am

I love my Martelli cutters! So much that I now have 6 of them. I've even converted my left-handed DIL.

Lois
2/8/2018 10:52:27 am

Hard to say what my favorite tool is, as there are a lot of great tools I use, but in the end, the part that puts it all together is my sewing machine, so my sewing machine. I like both versions of the quilt.

Kathy Autry
2/8/2018 10:54:46 am

Love your EQ8 course. My favorite tool has to be my Rowenta Perfect Steam Station . Quilters spend lots and lots of time ironing our fabrics !

Holly Wilson
2/8/2018 10:58:53 am

My favorite quilting tool is the rubber shelf liner, I can cut it to any size, thick enough to put on mat and hold rulers when trimming blocks or cutting fabric, rulers don't move.

Deborah B.
2/8/2018 11:00:49 am

Your Blue Moon Star quilt is lovely. My favorite tools have generally been my rotary cutter and rulers. However, lately I am loving using the Studio die cutter by Accuquilt that I am able to use at my local quilt shop. It really saves time when I'm cutting strips and squares (and it's more accurate). Also, I have been able to cut chisel pieces and tumblers that I probably wouldn't have tried to on my own.

Lori Smanski
2/8/2018 11:04:44 am

I get your emails and enjoy them. your quilt is gorgeous. pick someone else for the give a way please, I do not have electric quilt at this time. thank you

Mary Nicholson
2/8/2018 11:20:55 am

I am a new owner of EQ8 and I hope it becomes my favorite quilting tool. Currently, I would say my favorite tool is a Westalee ruler. Once I get EQ8 downloaded, I'll be looking at taking one of your classes.

Sandra Bassett
2/8/2018 11:27:04 am

I couldn't quilt without my rotary cutter. Unfortunately, I also value my seam ripper too.

Kyra
2/8/2018 11:35:44 am

My favorite tool.. hmm there are so many.

I guess my most favorite would be my Janome Horizon 9400. Sews like a dream and I sure spend a lot more time sewing these days.

I purchased EQ7 a year or so ago and still haven't tackled learning it... I so need a class :-)

Suzanne Miller
2/8/2018 11:36:29 am

Love the look. Can the batik fabric images free or is there a charge? Thanks!

Kari Schell

Barbara McKenzie
2/8/2018 11:42:48 am

Wow - can't pick just one! So.... start - EQ8, middle - rotary cutter, end - my Juki longarm! And I have learned so much from your videos, Kari - thanks!

My favorite quilt tool is my mini iron

I am constantly reaching for my Purple Thang when sewing. Thanks for the lesson; I've upgraded to version 8 but haven't used it a lot yet. I followed along with your video and drew the 2 options. I like #2 better.

Susan the Farm Quilter
2/8/2018 12:01:36 pm

I love your version #2! Right now my favorite quilting tool is my seam ripper...I'm having disagreements with a paper-pieced block! Do not consider me for your drawing as I don't have EQ.

Katie Bock
2/8/2018 12:02:51 pm

I love both versions of the quilt. My favorite quilting tool is my Brother PC420 sewing machine.

Jere Barrett
2/8/2018 12:22:27 pm

Any rotary cutting ruler. Makes blocks so accurate.

Valerie S
2/8/2018 12:32:10 pm

I have so many favorite quilting tools for different jobs, that it's difficult to pick just 1. For drafting & designing, EQ is my fav, for cutting, AccuQuilt Studio is tops, for piecing, it's my sewing machine, & quilting it's my mid-arm. My favorite gadget is the clover tailor's awl. I use it for many different things.

Thank you Kari for educating us and sponsoring this giveaway!

Jan Aji
2/8/2018 12:46:30 pm

My favorite tool is my design wall. I pin inspirations or ideas of future projects to it; I place finished blocks on it and use it to audition fabrics

Sharon O
2/8/2018 12:48:21 pm

My favorite quilting tools are my add a quarter plus ruler and EQ8 for designing. Love my classes with Kari in Tech Know Quilters.

shirley seo
2/8/2018 12:55:10 pm

Many thanks for all the wonderful; videos. I have learned a lot. My favorite tool would be my sewing machine.

Marti Meadows
2/8/2018 01:01:53 pm

I am having fun using EQ8. But I would have a hard time living without my sewing machine.

Sylvia Kenner
2/8/2018 01:08:22 pm

My favorite quilting tool is probably my Martelli ergonomic rotary cutter. I like the #1 quilt best but it was a tough decision!

Sherry Crockett
2/8/2018 01:10:27 pm

My favorite "tool" is my neighbor who is my quilting mentor. She got me into quilting 4 years ago and is always available when I need help or advice on how to improve my skills. She'll even share from her stash when I just can't find the right fabric.

Kristina Heili
2/8/2018 01:31:26 pm

I would make Option 2 design for a Blue Moon quilt. I love ALL of my quilting tools and I have LOTS of them, but my favorite is my custom-made 24"x72" ironing board with adjustable legs.

Joyce
2/8/2018 01:33:16 pm

Most necessary or most useful - that's the question. What would I do without my rotary rulers and cutter. I rarely use templates anymore. Pins, scissors, duh, how could I survive? But now, EQ8 has opened up so many more possibilities for my quilting pleasure.

Julia Bernstein
2/8/2018 01:53:01 pm

my favorite tool is EQ8 + my imagination.

Sandra Toomey
2/8/2018 01:53:30 pm

I love both versions of the paper pieced Blue Moon quilts but like the second one best. My favorite tool is my design board which is nothing but batting glued to a piece of styrofoam insulation and stuck on the wall. Would be lost without it.

Shirley link
2/8/2018 02:13:00 pm

Love version 2 of the quilt. My favorite tool beside EQ8 is the accuquilt cutter. So much fun to design quilts that enable me to use my dies!
Loved you tech know class!

Darcey Feltz
2/8/2018 02:30:15 pm

I'd have to say it would be my seam ripper HaHa!

Julie Haynie
2/8/2018 02:48:53 pm

My favorite quilting tool is my rotary cutter and mat. These tools were not available when I made my first quilts as a teenager. Quilting is enjoyable if you have the right tools. A mat and cutter are essential! I love the EQ8 program and all the help you are giving us with your lessons, Kari. Thanks so much!

Linda Vetter
2/8/2018 03:00:17 pm

I favorite quilting tool is EQ8. I never make a quilt without it and have recommended it to several friends. Just love this program!!!

Sue
2/8/2018 03:03:06 pm

My favorite tool is my trusty Bernina sewing machine.

Shann
2/8/2018 03:16:50 pm

My favorite tool is the Add-a-quarter ruler and the Ann's Magic button which adds a quarter inch seam allowance when rotary cutting applique. Both of your stars are beautiful, but the Option 2 is my favorite.

Sarah Bennett
2/8/2018 03:51:24 pm

Hands down my favorite quilt tool is my husband. He does the laundry, gets the meals, cleans the house, has told the ladies at the fabric store to sell me extra fabric so I don't run out when I do my quilt. He is my quilting buddy.

Susan Green
2/8/2018 04:10:29 pm

My favorite tool is my Roxanne thimble.

Jacquelyn Morris-Smith link
2/8/2018 04:24:22 pm

What a great quilt. I have enjoyed the Tech Know classes and the Shoot for the Stars classes. I think my favorite quilting tool is the Sewing Machines I own. I have complete confidence in their ability to tackle whatever project I throw at them and I can rely on perfect stitches each time.

Kristy
2/8/2018 04:25:30 pm

My favorite sewing tool would have to be my Bernina sewing machine. It is a workhorse and is reliable. Beyond that I would say EQ8, as I am finding I am able to save copious amounts of time in the designing process, which results with more time on the Bernina.

Moira Hewitt
2/8/2018 04:30:49 pm

I would make version 2 I think. My favorite gadget is my rotating cutting mat.Planning to update to EQ8 when I find it in the UK.

I love my Clover quilting clips

Marianne
2/8/2018 05:19:43 pm

I love using Inklingo for all my quilts. It prints the cutting and sewing lines on the back of your fabric, which gives you the best accuracy. I no longer make any quilts without it.

Elaine Benfield
2/8/2018 05:25:23 pm

My favorite tool is the Stripology ruler. It has made strip cutting so much faster and more accurate for me.

Paula Miceli
2/8/2018 05:26:27 pm

Picking one favorite tool is difficult, so I went back to basics. I couldn't do without my 1/4 inch feet for my sewing machines.

Donna
2/8/2018 05:32:34 pm

The rotary cutter really helped speed up the cutting process and resulted in more accurate quilt blocks. I would enjoy using EQ8

Melody Lutz
2/8/2018 05:38:29 pm

My favorite tool is my, yes, 18 year old spray bottle. She is all of 8 inches tall with trigger. She doesn't drip, doesn't leak when tipped over and is RELIABLE!

Lorry
2/8/2018 05:40:26 pm

Love your EQ8 Tech Know Quilters class. Great job Kari, videos are are thorough and easy to follow. My favorite quitling tool is my VISA card! It lets me buy all the fabric I can hide from my husband and all the notions a quilter could ever want!

Elaina Ailes
2/8/2018 06:00:13 pm

My favorite tool is the needle. Whether sewing by hand or machine, it would be hard to accomplish anything without one.

Julie link
2/8/2018 07:02:48 pm

Kari, I love version 2 and am loving the classes you produce for us, thankyou.
My favourite tool at present would be the new thread stand from superior threads as it allows me to use a cone or reel of thread on my machine so that the thread comes off correctly and does not twist and break.

Naoma Horney
2/8/2018 07:04:59 pm

Just upgraded my EQ7 to EQ8 Can't wait now for it to get here

Maria Nickler

My favorite Quilting tool is my ironing station. It is made with fabric covered ply wood about 24x40. Quilt blocks press nice and flat.

Laura link
2/8/2018 07:32:17 pm

Blue Moon option 2 would be my choice to piece.

Aside for EQ and my sewing machine...hmmmm....so hard to choose a favorite tool! My current favorite is my Essential Triangle tool.

Renata
2/8/2018 07:35:18 pm

EQ8 is definitely my favorite tool--gives me creative options I might not have thought about and I can slice and dice without cutting into my stash until ready. Thank you for the classes, Kari, gaining proficiency faster and having fun!

Jean Halvorson
2/8/2018 07:40:24 pm

I love quilt #2. I wouldn't be opposed to either one, though; maybe both. Since I do a lot of paper piecing, I have 3 that I wouldn't want to paper piece without; my Add-a-Quarter and Add-a-Eighth rulers and my small wallpaper roller. I know they make a small flat roller, but when I started paper piecing it was the only roller available.

Joan Hoffman
2/8/2018 08:01:36 pm

I can make blocks with cardboard templates and scissors or rotary cutters and rulers. I can sew by hand or machine. I can design on graph paper or EQ8. I can undo seams with my seam ripper or a pair of scissors.
So my favorite quilting tool is my hand quilting frame because I cannot quilt my quilts without it! It is so peaceful and relaxing to sit at my hand quilting frame and stitch my quilt layers together. I would not quilt without it!!
I really enjoyed your Shoot for the Stars course, Kari! I am eagerly awaiting a class that covers the applique features!
I love both of your Blue Moon options and would make Option 2 first.

Buffie Lorah
2/8/2018 08:39:32 pm

My favorite tool is the "add a quarter ruler." I do alot of paper piecing and it makes things go so much smoother! I love your blue moon stars and would love to try #2.

Julie Love
2/8/2018 09:56:37 pm

So many favorites -- it's hard to pick just one. I've been cutting quite a few strips this week with my "magic ruler"! Actually, it's the Stripology Ruler by Creative Grids. It's very sturdy and makes cutting strips and squares much quicker.

Vivian Oaks
2/8/2018 11:12:10 pm

I think at this point my favorite quilting tool is an African porcupine quill. It's super sharp on one end, but has more of a blunt tip on the opposite end. Thanks so much for the chance to win a discount on EQ8 classes. I don't have it yet, but one of these days... I still have EQ7, but haven't learned to use it... Again...one of these days.

Elsie Bulva
2/8/2018 11:36:09 pm

Thank you for all you do for us with EQ8 and your patience. My favourite tool are many but unfortunately I cannot do without my seam ripper. We were meant to be life long buddies.

Debbie Wheadon
2/8/2018 11:40:57 pm

Not so long ago I would have said my Quilter's FabCalc was my right arm but your EQ lessons have definitely changed that. So for now EQ gets the vote.

Maryellen McAuliffe
2/8/2018 11:45:08 pm

Great quilts. I use EQ8, too. I think my most important item is my rotary cutter, mat and rulers. Thanks.

Mona Harmann

My favorite tool is my rotary cutter. Recently forgot it on a retreat and felt helpless.

Rosemary Beeler
2/9/2018 07:34:50 am

I love using EQ8, my favorite tool is the bendable light, it makes threading needle easier and I can see and position light as needed.

Pat Harkins
2/9/2018 08:24:11 am

I like version 2 best. I love stars. I am working on a foundation pieced lone star variation I designed in EQ8. It is hard to pick a favorite tool, for designing EQ8 for quilting my thimble. I love both hand quilting and designing.

Jan Beckert
2/9/2018 08:32:44 am

Haha! I think my favorite tool is my seam ripper! In second place, the rotary cutter...

Deb Westerman

My favorite tool is my Pfaff machine, but I could not do without my Electric Quilt 8 software. I just love it.

Beth Glass
2/11/2018 06:16:07 pm

My favorite is the Strip Tube ruler. Using it, you can create blocks from tubes of strips, or trim half and quarter square triangles before pressing them, so they are always square and easy to trim with only 2 cuts.

Margaret Worsick
2/12/2018 10:17:34 am

My favorite tool at the moment is my MARTELLI rotary cutter. My quilt preference is #2 which I am currently doing in EQ8.

I am sooooooo impressed with this version of EQ
