Pieced Patch Draw - Instructor Led Online Class

String Quilt - Designing the Setting and Borders using Electric Quilt

I came up with a design for my string applique circles that I will share with you in this weeks video tutorial.  Learn the tricks for working with Layer 2 motifs and create a complementary string pieced border.
Picture

Piecing the String Piece Segments

Now that the design is done, it was time to get started on my quilt.  This week was dedicated to piecing strip sets.  My rules were:
  1. Only use the pre-cut strips in the overflowing storage bins.
  2. No rejecting ugly fabrics.

Trust me - that second rule was really hard to keep.  It is hard to believe I actually purchased and used some of these fabrics at some point in time.  My strips in my bins varied from 1" to 2-1/2" wide.  Seams were all pressed in one direction.
Picture
I started with the strips for the applique circles before knowing final design.  At least that is my excuse for making some of these sets a lot larger then required.  If you would like to make the circle quilt you will need the following:
  • 1 strip set at least 12" x 12"
  • 5 strip sets at least 8" x 8"
  • 2 strip sets at least 6" x 6"
Picture
For the border, I split my strips into four piles.
  • 20"+ strips
  • 15"+ strips
  • 10"+ strips
  • 5"+ strips

I then strip pieced each pile of similar length strips.  I will be cutting these into 4-1/2" segments and will need a total of 138 inches to go around the quilt.  This appears to be closer to 180 inches -- so I will have a little extra to play.
Happy quilting.

Introduction to Easy Draw (Tuesday, November 15, 9-12)

Have you ever found the “perfect” block online.  But then realized you wanted to piece it a different way.  Maybe you want rotary cutting instructions or a foundation pattern.  Or maybe you want a different size to incorporate into a different quilt.  With Electric Quilt you can redraft these blocks.  This class will focus on how to “read a block” and then come up with the most efficient way to draft it with Electric Quilt.  The blocks in this class are those that can be done in a “grid” format – basically just like drawing with a pencil and graph paper.  Within Electric Quilt these blocks are drafted within Easy Draw.  Level:  Advanced Beginner.

Beginning Setting and Borders in Electric Quilt (Tuesday, November 15, 1-4)

Explore taking your Electric Quilt skills to the next level by working with the various setting options in Electric Quilt.  This will include Basic Layouts, Adding Borders, Auto Borders, and a number of options that will work for Sampler quilts.  Level:  Advanced Beginner

Picture
Whim Wham Stars (Wednesday, November 16th, 9-4)

Do you like gazing at twinkling stars on a clear night?  You can now put those stars on your bed.  The asymmetrical star used in the sashing will make it appear that the stars are dancing across the quilt.  Quilt may be completed with seven fabrics or may be scrapped using fat quarters.

Learn tips and tricks for using recommended specialty rulers while piecing this quilt.

Trunk Show plus Using Specialty Rulers for Enhanced Speed and Accuracy (9:00 AM, Monday, November 14th)

Prepare to be educated as I describe my design process, show beautiful quilts and demonstrate useful tools.  During this lecture, you will see several quilts from my current designs and often sneak peeks at new projects.  Many of my projects utilize over-sized piecing and subsequent trim-downs with rulers from Deb Tucker’s Studio 180 Design.  I will share tips for effectively using these rulers.
Happy quilting.

Balloons

7/23/2016

"Is it hot enough for you?"  It is interesting how sayings you heard in childhood come back to you.  The next few days are projected to have heat indexes from 105 to 115.  I'm not even sure what the heat index is -- but for this ice skating girl I know it is definitely "hot enough".
Picture
I'm using the heat as an excuse to escape to the ice rink in the middle of the day (and hoping everyone doesn't have the same idea).  At home I'm working on a number of quilting projects, including ...

Balloons Pantograph

I've been wanting to develop my own pantograph to use with 2+6 = Easy.  And finally decided on balloons.  What a great way to celebrate a new baby or a special day in a child's life. I am really excited on how the pattern stitches out.  I've used on my last two 2+6=Easy quilts.

Happy 4th Lady Liberty Tutorial

7/4/2015

I hope you have fun things planned for this holiday (if you are in the US).  To celebrate, I thought I would re-post my video on creating a Lady Liberty quilt using Electric Quilt.  I will also be giving the next set of instructions for the Kite quilt.

Featured Quilt - Come Said the Wind

Pat C. shared her rendition of Come Said the Wind.  She embroidered the poem on her version of this quilt.  Very nice!
Quilted by Kari Schell
Pat C. Come Said the Wind
The poem in the quilt was written by George Cooper, an American poet who lived from  1838 – 1927.  The large wall hanging finishes to 33”□, while the small one finishes 15” x 12”.  To make construction easier, many sections in the quilt use over-sized piecing along with specialty rulers. If you cannot find the specialty ruler, instructions are provided for use of traditional rulers.

Purchase pattern here.
Happy quilting.
