Archery Summer Games Block 3

8/6/2016

Olympic Quilt Block
Archery Block by Kari Schell
Archery is the first medal to be awarded in the Rio Olympics.  So it makes sense that it is the first sport to be honored in the Summer Games quilt.

Archery had its debut at the 1900 Summer Olympics The most noticeable trend has been the dominance of the Korean women archers, who have won 14 out of 15 gold medals in the women's events since 1984.

I remember taking Archery in Gym class in Junior High School. I also remember trying my hand at Archery at Y Camp.  Given the concerns with weapons in the schools, I wonder if they still offer that sport in our school systems.
The free download period has ended.  Click here to purchase the block pattern for paper piecing. Pattern includes over-sized cutting instructions and piecing diagram.  Please make sure to verify that you are printing actual size (no scaling).  In your options you may need to uncheck print to page.

Click here to purchase other block patterns.
As a reminder, each day during the Olympics I will provide a free block for the quilt.  The instructions will be downloadable for 24 hours.  Check in each day to get all the patterns at no charge.  If you miss a pattern, you may purchase it in my store.
I've also included a second version as part of the same download in my store with the feathers pointing the other direction.

Archery Paper Piecing Block Drafted Using Electric Quilt
Select Block>New Block>Easy Draw Block.

Import the above image for tracing in the Tracing Image tab.

Drawing board set-up in the Easy Draw tab is:
  • Block Width/Height:  9 x 9  (the block will be pieced at 6" for the quilt, but it is easier to draft at 9 x 9)
  • Snaps:  36 x 36
  • Graph Paper:  9 x 9
  • Snapping Options:  Only Snap to Grid should be turned on.

Trace the block.

Add to Sketchbook.

Save.

Hi Kari, Thanks for the pattern and even more for the instructions for drafting in EQ7. I have learned so much since following this project and in this short time, EQ7 doesn't feel as daunting. Many thanks!!

Kari, is there anyway to turn the "feather" part around with this pattern? For some reason it just "feels" wrong for them to be pointing up the ardor instead of down the arrow. I'm not criticizing, just asking. Love your EQ7 pointers!

DeeVee -- thanks for the feedback. I decided to include a second option in my store (with the feathers turned the other direction).http://www.onpointquilter.com/store/p123/Block_3_Archery.html

It's nice to look at your updated layout of all the blocks on the quilt and can't wait for the finished project. I'm just wondering, I see you have the swimming block on both upper corners but don't see the previously issued Golf block, and of course, just issued todays block of Gymnastics. I'm wondering if the Golf should be in one of the Swimming blocks?

Love this idea and can't wait to start on it :) Many thanks.
