Scrappy Squares Applique EQ8 Tutorial

9/21/2024

I've been quilting a long time -- and the one thing I have never run out of is scraps from my previous projects.

So I am always excited when I can come up with a new (and simple) way to use those scraps in a new quilt.

This is one of those ideas that you will want to keep playing with.  The first quilt was so much fun.  I decided to design 5 additional quilts.

The applique is definitely "no stress" as every applique shape I used was from the EQ8 Block library.

This quilt starts with a 20 inch block comprised only of 1 inch squares.

And it can be drafted in under a minute -- promise!

Coloring will take a bit longer.

I decided to go with a fall-like theme.  So I picked colors that reminded me of fall from the default fabrics in EQ.

In my real quilt, I will use fabric from my "collection" of scraps.  Some of which are 30 years old.  :)

For applique shapes, look for motifs with a single shape -- or at least a larger shape that could feature the 1" squares.

Under the EQ8 Library, consider motifs under:
  • Silhouettes
  • Simple Shapes

Or, consider drafting your own.

I chose to use the folk art leaf from the Leaves category.

But rather than one leaf -- I decided to create a wreath using one of my favorite applique tools -- Wreathmaker.

For the quilt, consider using the Tile On Point Corners option.  The blocks can be filled with either pieced blocks or fabric.

I chose to fille the blocks with a combination of four patches and left-over fabric from my 20" square.

I mentioned that this was a bit addicting.  So I created a number of different center options.

I did find it necessary to do some minor size adjustments of some of my motifs -- as I didn't want to overlap the red triangles.

For the apple, I chose to create another coloring of the block -- using red and pink scraps only.

I look forward to seeing what you decide to create with this concept.

Feel free to share your designs in the Learning EQ Facebook group.  I've set up a post for your quilts.

Personal Progress

I am at a quilt retreat this weekend.  I pulled a large stack of strips from my left-over collection.  trimmed to 1-1/2 inch and created a variety of strip sets.

It is so satisfying using these up these scraps.

Will now sub-cut at 1-1/2" and piece in rows.

Hopefully I have enough for one of these quilts.
