Fencing Summer Games Block 4

8/7/2016

Olympic Sports Quilt Block
Fencing Paper Pieced Block by Kari Schell
Fencing has been contested at every Summer Olympic Games since the birth of the modern Olympic movement at the 1896 Summer Olympics in Athens.

There are three forms of Olympic fencing:
  • Foil — a light thrusting weapon; the valid target is restricted to the torso; double touches are not allowed.
  • Épée — a heavy thrusting weapon; the valid target area covers the entire body; double touches are allowed.
  • Sabre — a light cutting and thrusting weapon; the valid target area includes almost everything above the waist (excluding the back of the head and the hands); double touches are not allowed.
The free download period has ended.  Click here to purchase the block pattern for paper piecing.  Pattern includes over-sized cutting instructions and piecing diagram.  Please make sure to verify that you are printing actual size (no scaling).  In your printer options you may need to uncheck "print to page".

As a reminder, each day during the Olympics I will provide a free block for the quilt.  The instructions for each block will be downloadable for 24 hours.  Check in each day to get all the patterns at no charge.  If you miss a pattern, you may purchase it in my store.

Drafting Fencing Block Using Electric Quilt

Fencing Electric Quilt Diagram
Select Block>New Block>Easy Draw Block.

Import the above image for tracing in the Tracing Image tab.

Drawing board set-up in the Easy Draw tab is:
  • Block Width/Height:  12 x 12
  • Snaps:  24 x 24
  • Snapping Options:  Only Snap to Grid should be turned on.

Using the Line tool, divide block into major sections (see image below).

Add to Sketchbook.

Change snapping options to only Snap to Lines and Arcs of Drawing.

Trace each section.  Add to Sketchbook after each section is drawn.  Sometimes the lines will bend or shift a bit.  If that happens just go back to the previous drawing in the Sketchbook and restart from that point.

That was fun Kari! Thank you!
Will you be showing us where you are placing the blocks onto the quilt layout before we are through?

Yes. They will go in the "block spaces for the first and 3rd borders. I haven't quilt decided which blocks will go in which space. But I will post the "concept" tomorrow. Thanks for the suggestion.

Looks like fun! Your link to purchase other blocks doesn't work on this page.

Kari,
I am having trouble downloading the instructions each day. I thought I was doing it correctly but I only have Blocks 1 and 3. Any suggestions for what I'm doing wrong? Claire

The blocks are only downloadable from the blog post for 24 hours. I've been keeping them a little bit longer than that because of time zone differences across the world. (And I decided to leave block 1 as a free pattern throughout the series.) You should be able to click on the links on the fencing (block 4) and swimming (block 5) blocks at this time (8/8 am). (I just retested the links and they work) The pdf should open and you should be able to do a "save as" on your computer. If they aren't downloading, you may want to try a different browser on your computer.

For block 2, you will need to purchase the pattern from my store or you can draft the block in EQ.
