Block #10 is Boxing. Jabs, crosses, uppercuts... a single punch can make all the difference in boxing. The sport made its Olympic debut at St Louis 1904 and women entered the fray at London 2012. At Rio 2016, there are 13 categories – 10 for men and three for women. Click here to purchase and download the block pattern for paper piecing. The free download period for this block has ended. A very narrow zigzag would have the same look/feel. Click here to purchase other block patterns. As a reminder, each day during the Olympics I will provide a free block for the quilt. Updated LayoutThere are still three blocks to go for this set of borders. But it is time to start thinking about the setting pieces. Cut the pieces as follows: A: 3" x 6-1/2" cut 8 using gold B: 3-1/4" x 6-1/2" cut 4 using silver C: 2" x 32-1/4" cut 2 using bronze D: 2" x 35-1/4" cut 2 using bronze I am thinking I will go with the medal colors for these borders - but am reserving judgement until I can lay out the quilt with all my finished blocks. Block 9 - EquestrianIt has been quite a few years since I have been on horseback. My last couple of times have been on very special vacations -- while in Zimbabwa and on a Caribbean cruise. Horseback on the beach along the ocean was pretty cool. I would love to experience a vacation on a Dude ranch one year. Any suggestions? The current Olympic equestrian disciplines are Dressage, Eventing, and Jumping. Equestrian disciplines the only Olympic events that involve animals. The horse is considered as much an athlete as the rider. Click here to purchase and download the block pattern for paper piecing. The free download period for this block has ended. Mom purchased a ping pong table with S&H Green Stamps for us in the late 60s. Customers would receive these stamps at the checkout counter of supermarkets, department stores, and gasoline stations, which could be redeemed for products in the catalog. The table was set up in the basement and we would spend hot summer days in the basement playing ping pong. (It was the coolest room in our un-air-conditioned house.) China has many of the leading players and is favored to win many of the gold medals for these Olympic events. Click here to purchase and download the block pattern for paper piecing. I've promised myself one as soon as I get this post done. There are actually four major categories of cycling in the Olympics. All events are speed races. Track cycling is usually held on specially built banked tracks or velodromes using track bicycles. Road bicycle racing is held on paved roads. Road racing is the most popular professional form of bicycle racing. Mountain bike racing is held on off-road terrain. BMX racing is a type of off road bicycle racing. The track usually consists of a starting gate for up to eight racers, a groomed, serpentine, dirt race course made of various jumps and rollers and a finish line. The course is usually flat, about 15 feet wide and has large banked corners that help the riders maintain speed. Do you like the wheels on the paper pieced bicycle? They will take a bit of time of piece -- but I think it is worth the extra effort. Click here to download the block pattern for paper piecing. After the Swimming block, I thought you might appreciate a bit of a break. Weightlifting, is an athletic discipline in which the athlete attempts a maximum-weight single lift of a barbell loaded with weight plates. The two competition lifts in order are the snatch and the clean and jerk. Each weightlifter receives three attempts in each, and the combined total of the highest two successful lifts determines the overall result.
