Cycling Summer Games Block 7

8/10/2016

Paper Pieced Pattern Available at On Point Quilter
Cycling Quilt Block by Kari Schell
Block #7 is Cycling.  As I write this post, it is 75 degrees, a slight breeze and low humidity.  The perfect weather for a bike ride.  I've promised myself one as soon as I get this post done.

There are actually four major categories of cycling in the Olympics.  All events are speed races.

Track cycling is usually held on specially built banked tracks or velodromes using track bicycles.

Road bicycle racing is held on paved roads. Road racing is the most popular professional form of bicycle racing.

Mountain bike racing is held on off-road terrain.

BMX racing is a type of off road bicycle racing.  The track usually consists of a starting gate for up to eight racers, a groomed, serpentine, dirt race course made of various jumps and rollers and a finish line. The course is usually flat, about 15 feet wide and has large banked corners that help the riders maintain speed.
Do you like the wheels on the paper pieced bicycle?  They will take a bit of time of piece -- but I think it is worth the extra effort.

Click here to download the block pattern for paper piecing.  (The free download period for this block has now expired.)  Pattern includes over-sized cutting instructions and piecing diagram.  Please make sure to verify that you are printing actual size (no scaling).  In your options you may need to uncheck "print to page".

Weightlifting Summer Games Block 6

8/9/2016

Weightlifting Olympic Quilt Block
Weightlifting Paper Pieced Block by Kari Schell
Block #6 in the Summer Games Quilt is Weightlifting.  This is an easier one.  After the Swimming block, I thought you might appreciate a bit of a break.

Weightlifting, is an athletic discipline in which the athlete attempts a maximum-weight single lift of a barbell loaded with weight plates.

The two competition lifts in order are the snatch and the clean and jerk. Each weightlifter receives three attempts in each, and the combined total of the highest two successful lifts determines the overall result.

Swimming Summer Games Block 5

Swimming Olympic Sport Block
Swimming Paper Pieced Block by Kari Schell
Swimming has been a sport at every Summer Olympics.  It is one of my favorite to watch.  I especially enjoy the synchronized swimming event.

Today's block was inspired by the Snails Trail quilt block.  I incorporate two of these blocks in the bottom half of the quilt to give the illusion of stroking.

Here is what the layout looks like with the five blocks provided to date.  There will be 22 different blocks in the quilt (with a few blocks used more than once).  I still haven't decided on the sashing color.  I am waiting for more of my blocks to be completed and potentially a trip to the quilt store.

Fencing Summer Games Block 4

8/7/2016

Olympic Sports Quilt Block
Fencing Paper Pieced Block by Kari Schell
Fencing has been contested at every Summer Olympic Games since the birth of the modern Olympic movement at the 1896 Summer Olympics in Athens.

There are three forms of Olympic fencing:
  • Foil — a light thrusting weapon; the valid target is restricted to the torso; double touches are not allowed.
  • Épée — a heavy thrusting weapon; the valid target area covers the entire body; double touches are allowed.
  • Sabre — a light cutting and thrusting weapon; the valid target area includes almost everything above the waist (excluding the back of the head and the hands); double touches are not allowed.

Archery Summer Games Block 3

8/6/2016

Olympic Quilt Block
Archery Block by Kari Schell
Archery is the first medal to be awarded in the Rio Olympics.  So it makes sense that it is the first sport to be honored in the Summer Games quilt.

Archery had its debut at the 1900 Summer Olympics The most noticeable trend has been the dominance of the Korean women archers, who have won 14 out of 15 gold medals in the women's events since 1984.

I remember taking Archery in Gym class in Junior High School. I also remember trying my hand at Archery at Y Camp.  Given the concerns with weapons in the schools, I wonder if they still offer that sport in our school systems.
