This block is dedicated to my niece Sara (who was a gymnast while in high school) and my niece Josie (who currently is in gymnastics and does amazing splits). This has been my favorite competitions to watch in Rio. Both Semone Biles and Ali Raisman were amazing. I particularly enjoyed their balance beam and floor routine performances. Gymnastics at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro are held in three categories: artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics and trampolining. Artistic gymnastics is a discipline of gymnastics in which athletes perform short routines on different apparatus. Rhythmic gymnastics is a sport in which individuals or groups of 5 or more manipulate one or two pieces of apparatus: rope, hoop, ball, clubs, ribbon and freehand. Trampolining is a competitive Olympic sport in which gymnasts perform acrobatics while bouncing on a trampoline. Click here to purchase and download the block pattern for paper piecing. Trace the remaining two sections. Add to Sketchbook after each section is drawn. Sometimes the lines will bend or shift a bit. If that happens just go back to the previous drawing in the Sketchbook and restart from that point. Color. Add to Sketchbook. Save. Block #11 is Golf. I have never figured out the swing in golf and have had lots of "air" shots. I am must more inclined to enjoy a game of mini-golf. Even though I usually end up in last place at our annual family game. Golf was first played at the Olympic Games in Paris in 1900, only to be removed after 1904 – it returns in 2016 after more than a century's absence. The sport made its Olympic debut at St Louis 1904 and women entered the fray at London 2012. At Rio 2016, there are 13 categories – 10 for men and three for women. But it is time to start thinking about the setting pieces. Cut the pieces as follows: A: 3" x 6-1/2" cut 8 using gold B: 3-1/4" x 6-1/2" cut 4 using silver C: 2" x 32-1/4" cut 2 using bronze D: 2" x 35-1/4" cut 2 using bronze I am thinking I will go with the medal colors for these borders - but am reserving judgement until I can lay out the quilt with all my finished blocks. Block 9 - EquestrianIt has been quite a few years since I have been on horseback. My last couple of times have been on very special vacations -- while in Zimbabwa and on a Caribbean cruise. Horseback on the beach along the ocean was pretty cool. I would love to experience a vacation on a Dude ranch one year. Any suggestions? The current Olympic equestrian disciplines are Dressage, Eventing, and Jumping. Equestrian disciplines the only Olympic events that involve animals. The horse is considered as much an athlete as the rider. Click here to purchase and download the block pattern for paper piecing. The free download period for this block has ended. Mom purchased a ping pong table with S&H Green Stamps for us in the late 60s. Customers would receive these stamps at the checkout counter of supermarkets, department stores, and gasoline stations, which could be redeemed for products in the catalog. The table was set up in the basement and we would spend hot summer days in the basement playing ping pong. (It was the coolest room in our un-air-conditioned house.) China has many of the leading players and is favored to win many of the gold medals for these Olympic events. Click here to purchase and download the block pattern for paper piecing.
